Objectives

The vertical structure of the Course in the design area proposes for the 2nd year an introduction on the issues of design methodology and the continuity of the learning process started in the 1st year, developing and consolidating the instrumental and conceptual capacities for the design exercise. This practice presumes the capacity of experimentation and synthesis of diverse convergent issues on the architecture field, which will always be subjacent in the proposal of an architectonic form.
The 2nd year design process should focus on the renovation of a consolidated city area, easily identifiable, proposing buildings of variable dimension and complexity with an equipment and restaurant program. It should privilege the analysis of the building set, the public space and the city, using as support architecture and urban history and architectonic analysis methodology, with the goal that each student builds and fundaments its reading of the site. The process of intervention and context observation should lead to the identification and characterization of the diverse architectonic elements and forms that constitute the design area and its meaning in the city history, aiming an objective validity of each transformation proposed. This should result from a process in which the area knowledge and the creative and critic capacity of the student reveals a progressive improvement of the proposal validity and its design.

Learning outcomes and competences

It is intended to develop and consolidate conceptual and instrumental capabilities through the exercise of Project.

Experimentation and convergent synthesis of diverse knowledge in the field of Architecture are transmitted through examples of architecture, identified and accurate, so that the student can construct a framework of complex relationships and analogies. The continued development of the design process and its constant retelling allows a progressive enrichment in the grounds of the proposal, basing critical and creative capacity before the problems posed and basing the proposed transformation.

Learning at UC Project 2 increases the ability to interpret and relate different forms of design and conceive city and architecture, and allows the focalization in his own project practice. Moreover, the ability of progression, of using various instruments and materials design ensures diverse responses to the posed problems, and the construction of a theoretical support of the urban, programmatically and volumetric solution, through the accuracy of the drawings submitted.

Program

The programmatic content of this course refers to the relationship between analysis and proposition in the design process. Based on a general theme - “Architectonic analysis of context and design options – place, building and city” - the subject explanation will be ordered as follows:
1st theme – Design and Place
2nd theme: Design and History
3rd Theme: Design, Language and Construction

Teaching methods and learning activities

In this theoretical/practical course design exercise has a fundamental role, as a reference, for the programmatic content development.
It will be proposed an exercise, to be held in three complementary phases, involving low complexity programs, in a real, consolidated and urban context. This exercise will be developed in appropriate scales to the global conception and, in parallel, with scales that allow addressing general issues due to choices on certain materials and constructive systems.
The first phase will focus on the totality of the exercise area, starting with an analysis process of the context, program evaluation and awareness as well as a presentation of a global proposal for the intervention, properly justified.
The second phase will consist on the development of specific actions within the global proposal, with the proposed building further objectified.
The third phase is critical to deepening the earlier work through a process of gradual adjustment and synthesis between the two levels of intervention – the building and the city (public space/collective space).
The presentation of the work produced in each of the three phases will be held at the end of each school term, on the date set in the documents that will be handed out at the beginning of each phase.
Alongside, information addressing the issues and needs arisen during the development stages of the design process will be provided, in order to stimulate the students’ research and questioning capabilities throughout the process of design and materialization of an architectural idea.
The teaching process will develop in three weekly sessions of two hours teaching, intended to the realization of the practical exercise, and one and a half hour theoretical session with explanatory material and debate, following the objectives defined above. Students should produce texts of critical reflection on the subject material presented in the lectures.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Assessment Components

designation Weight (%)
Participação presencial 25,00
Trabalho de campo 25,00
Trabalho escrito 5,00
Trabalho laboratorial 45,00
Total: 100,00

Eligibility for exams

Periodic evaluation without final exam.
There are three evaluation moments corresponding to the three phases of the design process, with publicized grades. The evaluation will focus on group work, individual project, class participation, work process developed throughout the school year and attendance of the student.
The student regularly enrolled may not exceed the maximum number of faults equal to 25% of the classes scheduled.

Calculation formula of final grade

Each phase of the work will start with a work sheet. The evaluation will be a pretext for collective reflection on the work developed thus far. In the process of teaching and learning each evaluation will comprise former evaluations. The final stage of evaluation will therefore assess the acquisition of global theoretical and practical skills in the exercise and its explanation.
The final rating will be the weighted outcome of the exercises evaluation and the activities listed above and developed throughout the school year.

Classification improvement

In case the student requires an improvement of the final grade, the process will only take place the following year.
