Objectives

Acording to article 20th, nr. 1, b) of Decreto-Lei nº 74/2006, of March 24th, reggarding the structure of MsC degree cicle of studies includes a dissertation of sciencific nature or a project, original and specially developed for this purpose (...)

This Curricular Unit has the purposes of

1) Promoting scientific curiosity and academis integrity, as fundamental capabilities for the achievement of a Dissertation of a theoretical, or theoretical and practical nature, whose contents and methods produce accurate and original results in the field of Architecture.

2) To inform and exemplify the structure of scientif works, methods of research and comunication according to academic standars.

3) To promote the autonomy of the MIARQ student of FAUP towards the definition of personal scientific interests and foccusing of a problem that may be adjusted to the time and material resources assigned for the work.

4) To support the student's initiatives for a scientific tutor's choice, either from FAUP ou UP or external. To promote the tempestive elaboration of the Studies Plan and its submition to the Scientific Comitee.

5) To offer a specific space and teaching time that favour the framing and porsuit of the personal work within an  environment of critical team force, from the starting phases of problem definition to final phases of dissertation writing and public comunication 

Learning outcomes and competences

1) Capability of problem formulation and field definition of research.

2) Capability of justifying hypothesis through state of the art work, experimental work or documental findings.

3) Capability to formulate consistent and adequate methods of research

4) Capability of writing a document that comprehends and translates with clarity, scientif accuracy and originality, the accomplishment of research. 

5) Capability of oral comunication of one's work, both for specialized and non specialist audience.

1. How to make a thesis, from Umberto Eco to Robert Stake.

Panoramic or Monographic thesis. Scientific Fields. Disciplinarity and Interdisciplinarity. Architecture and her fiels ( Project, Theory, Drawing, Construction, Urbanism, ...). Nature of scientif research ( Bibliographic, Experimental, Documental...). The role of promotor or scientific tutor. Intelectual freedom and independance, Scientific Humility.

Teaching methods and learning activities

This Curricular Unit is tutorial teaching, with plenary sessions every two weeks with participant guests that will develop thematic areas and will promote debate and critical thinking:

PhD Álvaro Domingos - Scientific Curuosity and Interdisplinarity.

Architect António Madureira - Universality of Knowledge and Construction.

PhD Maria Raquel Pelayo - Methods of Research and Struturing of Scientific Works. Drawing and The Design of Knowlege.

PhD Joaquim Moreno - Theory of Contemporary Architecture.

Eligibility for exams

Approval of Dissertation Plan of Studies by the Scientific Comitte of MIARQ.

Dissertation Submission:

a) Conditions for acceptance

 The candidate must submit 3 printed and digital copies of the thesis for the members of the jurate, A declaration by the candidate of originality, authorship and purpose to the dissertation Exam. Declaration by the supervisor of the thesis.

The Dissertation Cover must follow the Modelo de capa para Diossertação de Mestrado that is published in the academic site of FAUP. (https://sigarra.up.pt/faup/pt/noticias_geral.ver_noticia?p_nr=3936).

The first page must include the following items: FAUP, Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Arquitetura, academic year, Títle, name of the Student and the name of the Supervisor . 

Type and size of the lettering must obey to general principles of sumbition of academic papers ( recommended sizes 10 to 12 for the text corpus and foot notes minimum size 9).

Abstract in portuguese and english will make part of the thesis as well as indexes ( of the tehis, of thge references for graphics and pictures, bibliograhy and other sources)

Structure and Contents are of the student's responsability, freedom of research and expression, sponsored by his supervisor.   

After the Exam, the student must deposit one copy of the printed  thesis at the Library of FAUP as well as one digital copy including 8 Key-words. A receipt must be required to be presented to the Students Office, after which the final classification of the MsC Course will be launched.

b) Schedule for submission

The schedule for Plan submission is published annualy by the Scientific Comitee of MIARQ in the academic site of FAUP
