Objectives

The aim of this unit is to introduce students to some of the subjects of the discipline of landscape architecture. Special attention is given to the principles of the design of the landscape as a living, dynamic and sensitive entity, in order to accommodate a diversity of human recreational activities aiming at increasing well-being and quality of life.

Program

Landscape architecture as art and as profession. Fundamentals - design with nature, consideration on natural processes and resources. History of Landscape Architecture. From the cultivated landscape to gardens and from gardens to parkland. Particular attention is given to the period between the 18th c. English landscape gardens to contemporary design. Public space and private landscapes – from domestic gardens to public parks. From design to construction – economic, functional and ecological principles.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical classes and supervision of students' research works.
Each group of students develops three practical works which aim at researching, assessing and criticizing three different amenity landscapes built in different historical periods, from the 18th c. English landscape gardens to the actuality. Students make the oral presentation of their research works

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Calculation formula of final grade

Minimum mark for each research work – 9,5. The final mark is calculated summing the marks of the works and dividing it by three.
