Objectives

To understand the conceptual and technical magnitude of ancient and medieval architectonic expressions in their specific territorial and urban, formal and constructive dimensions.
To contribute to the development of an inquisitive introductory methodology to the study of the History of Architecture which may become a matrix to address the historic context of architectonic units, regardless of the time and space to which they belong, in terms of location, function, form, technique, image, symbol and meaning.

Program

I – HISTORY AND ARCHITECTURE
1. The symbolic signification inherent in Man.
2. The historic dimensions of human appropriation of space and time: individual and society, territory and city, inhabitation and economic production.

II EASTERN ANTIQUITY – Territory, City and Architecture
1. The continental territories of the great rivers: the settlement of agricultural societies and the organisation of space.
2. Mesopotamia: cities and monumental architecture.
3. Ancient Egypt: territorial and political unity, urban units, stone architecture of temples and tombs.


III CLASSIC ANTIQUITY – Territory, City and Architecture
1. The emergence of territorial insularity of the Aegean and the Mediterranean; space and time.
2. Crete: the palatial architectonic matrix.
3. Greece: classic city and Hellenistic city, Greek sanctuary and temple.
4. Rome: imperial urban matrix and civic architecture.

IV MIDDLE AGES - Territory, City and Architecture
1. Territorial fragmentation and the emergence of the local as a counterpoint to the universal in terms of Christendom.
2. Ruralisation of the West – castles and monastic complexes.
3. Urban renaissance – reduced city and urban expansion movements, episcopal city and new urban creations in the models of bastide and villes neuves, city limits, forms and architectures.
4. Religious monumental architectures: units of the High Middle Ages, Roman church and Gothic cathedral.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The syllabus is delivered in 2-hour theory classes, complemented by 2-hour practical classes in which steered debate is promoted to deepen the course content, on the basis of individual monographic studies for the analysis and interpretation of the specific examples of architecture and the city contained in the syllabus.
