Subject:
Abstract (EN):
This manual focuses on the evaluation of stresses and strains in any cross section of linear bars, which constitute isostatic or once hyperstatic structures. Linear bars are subject to the effects of axial force, transverse force, bending moment and torsional moment, and their combinations. The elastic instability of axially compressed bars is explained. The materials that make up the bars are controlled by general safety criteria, yield and failure criteria.
The topics covered are divided into eight chapters. The contents that make up each chapter are the collection of documents illustrated in the theoretical-practical classes of “Strength of Materials 1” of the Bachelor in Civil Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), from the academic year 1996 to the present.
Therefore, this manual does not include all of the ‘classic’ matters associated with Material Resistance. The author suggests consulting the ‘classic’ bibliography for a more detailed study of the topics covered in the manual.
