Abstract (EN):
The main goal of this paper is to explore conference interpreters’ perceptions of a) their own gestural behaviour in the booth; b) the speakers’ and booth colleagues’ gestural behaviour; and c) a possible relation between the interpreters’ and the speakers’ gestural behaviour. The method selected for this exploration was semi-structured in-depth interviews. The semi-structured approach was felt to be the most appropriate way to foster an open-ended investigation conducive to interesting intuitions, ideas and hypotheses as well as possibly corroborating the results obtained in previous related research. The fluent transcription of the interviews with fourteen conference interpreters belonging to Portuguese and international professional associations was explored using thematic analysis. The analysis resulted in 41 interrelated themes, which were hierarchically organised into a system of categories. The thematic map created to represent this system reflects a pragmatic, communicative and cognitive perspective on gesture functions.
