Abstract (EN): When two buildings are built close to each other and the separation distance is not enough, seismic excitation results in large lateral displacements and buildings may collide with each other. This phenomena is called "pounding", which can result in severe damage to the affected structures. In this paper the contact zone is considered as a point, located at the level of a slab and buildings are assumed to be two bodies. In order to simulate impact, an unreal element is used between the two mentioned points, which is mathematically described as a spring and dashpot. A dashpot is used to determine energy absorption and is introduced using an impact damping ratio (IDR). In this paper, a new equation of motion is suggested to calculate the IDR and the accuracy of equation is investigated. © Civil-Comp Press,2015.
