Resumo (PT): A seguinte dissertação tem como objecto de estudo o “Hotel Turismo da Guarda”. Este trata-se do primeiro hotel da região e encontra-se fechado desde 2010. Desde então, o edifício saído dos moldes de um concurso dos anos 30 e dos quais só foram construídos dois hotéis (Hotel Turismo da Guarda e o Hotel Turismo de Castelo Branco), encontra-se em elevado estado de deterioração. O turismo é uma actividade que se começa a desenvolver em Portugal no princípio do século XX. Na cidade da Guarda, uma das principais fronteiras de Portugal, as primeiras ideias de exploração turística levam a que, desde muito cedo, se decida construir um hotel nesta cidade pequena da província da Beira Alta. No ano de 1933, decide-se em Lisboa, através de uma iniciativa do “Notícias Ilustrado”, lançar uma campanha publicitária com o desenho de um Hotel para cada província do país. Esta exposição passaria pela Guarda dando o “empurrão” final à ideia de construir uma unidade hoteleira. O “Hotel Turismo” foi construído nos moldes deste concurso do “Hote-Modelo” com um projecto do arq. Vasco Regaleira. Construído durante os anos 30/40 levou 13 até ficar pronto. Mais tarde sofreu ampliações do arquitecto Raul Rodrigues Lima, em 1966, e do arq. Madeira (arq. da Câmara Municipal da Guarda), em 1989. Actualmente encontra-se fechado, tendo sido apontadas várias saídas. Uma das ideias consistia em transformá-lo numa Escola de Hotelaria com Hotel de Aplicação. Esta dissertação usa essa ideia e desenvolve-a para apresentar uma possível proposta de arquitectura contemplando este tema. As reflexões de projecto surgem através da exploração do programa e dos problemas que surgem dele: a complexidade, as hierarquias e os utilizadores, além das dificuldade de criar uma nova volumetria que dialogue com o edifício antigo. Através de uma estrutura que consegue apresentar tanto informação histórica/teórica como informação de projecto, constrói-se um relato sobre a história do edifício e do processo de trabalho.

Abstract (EN): The following dissertation focuses on the case study “Hotel Turismo da Guarda”. This was the first Hotel built in the region and has been closed since 2010. Since then the building, that originated from an architecture competition in the 30’s from witch only two hotels were built (“Hotel Turismo da Guarda” and the “Hotel Turismo de Castelo Branco”), presents a high state of deterioration. Tourism is an activity that started developing, in Portugal, in the be¬ginning of the twentieth century. In the city of Guarda, one of the main land borders in Portugal, the first ideas of tourist exploitation lead, early on, to the decision of building an hotel in this small city in the province of Beira Alta. In the year of 1933, it’s decided in Lisbon, as part of and initiative of the newspaper “Notícias Ilustrado”, to throw a publicity campaign with a design of an hotel for each Province of the country. This exhibition would pass through Guarda, giving it the final push, in the decision of building an hotel. The “Hotel Turismo” was then built, according de ideas of the “Hotel-Modelo” and designed by architect Vasco Regaleira. Built during the 30/40’s, it took thirteen years to completion. Years later the Hotel went through extension projects, designed by architect Raul Rodrigues Lima and architect Madeira. Nowadays the building is closed and there have been appointed several ideas to solve this problem. One of those ideas consists in transforming the building into a Hotelier School with an Hotel included. This dissertation builds upon this idea, aiming to present a possible design using this building and theme. Reflections concerning the design arise through the exploration of the program and the problems related to it: complexity, hierarchy, and of course the problems that building a new volume that contains this program and “communicates” with the old building. Using a structure that presents historic/theoretical information as well as information concerning the design of a project, this dissertation “builds” a story about the old building and the “voyage” through the working process.
