José Barbedo (Porto, 1974) holds a Doctorate in Science in Civil Engineering (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), 2016), a Masters of Science in Project and Planning of the Urban Environment (Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, 2008), and a Masters in Architecture (Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP), 1998). He is a member of the research group Flood Risk Management and Urban Resilience and the research group Urban Stormwater Management and Sustainable Cities from UFRJ. His research work follows a transversal approach to the study of social, economic and political dynamics that contribute to the reproduction of socioecological conflicts and environmental risks.
José started his professional path with Paulo Mendes da Rocha (Pritzker laureate 2016), with whom he did his internship in 1996/97 in São Paulo, Brazil. In 1998 received a Research Initiation Scholarship from Oriente Foundation, developed in India until 1999. In 2000 founded with Nuno Sottomayor and Francisco Mourão, the company MBS architecture design, based in Porto, where he worked as Associate Manager until 2006. In 2006-07 was contracted by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) as Municipal Planning Officer in Angola. In 2008-09 was contracted by WSP International Sweden as Urban Planner to collaborate on the 3rd Generation Planning Project in Libya, and was appointed Coordinator of the Tripoli Master Plan in 2009. In 2012 received a Visiting Fellowship from the University of Birmingham, and in 2014-16 received a special grant awarded by the Foundation for Research Support of Rio de Janeiro.
After concluding his D.Sc. thesis on the concept of Land-Use Adaptation, José signed two service contracts in 2017 to collaborate with the Centre of Studies in Architecture and Urbanism of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (CEAU/FAUP). In 2018-19 was contracted as full-time Researcher by the University of Porto to work at CEAU/FAUP. In 2020 received a Permaculture Design Certification with Maurício Umann, and was contracted by HabitaRegen CRL for designing an ecovillage with 100 residences in a landscape unit of 42 hectares in Alenquer, Portugal. Since 2021, José is conducting a transdisciplinary pilot project involving architecture design, silviculture and ecosystem restoration in the Azores, under the broad objective of developing integrated solutions to the challenges posed by the current trends of biodiversity loss and global demand for wood on forest management.
