Program

Heritage and landscape are today inseparable and vital subjects in contemporary society as a support of identity and factors of sustainable socio-cultural and territorial development. This curricular unit proposes to foster interdisciplinary work areas - between Architecture, Art History, Landscape Architecture and Civil Engineering - essential for an understanding of the concept of heritage in its contemporary and extended sense – built and natural, material and immaterial.

This training unit proposes a critical approach to the concepts of heritage and cultural landscape, including the historical and theoretical framework, methodological and project tools, as well as safeguarding and management tools. In this way, it is intended to deepen knowledge on the history and theories of intervention in built heritage in a broad sense with the purpose of establishing a contemporary practice and management of intervention in built heritage and landscape, integrating the comprehension of its multiple stratigraphies.

The curricular unit is structured in the following syllabus:

Architectural and Urban Heritage
-Heritage: evolution of the concept and contemporary meanings.
-Theories of intervention in built heritage: historical perspective and current debate.
-Methodologies and tools of analysis, diagnosis and intervention in built heritage.
- Intervention practices: rehabilitation, conservation and maintenance. National and international examples.

Cultural Landscape
- Cultural landscapes - The Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage and the guidelines for inclusion on the World Heritage List (1972); the Florence Charter on the Safeguarding of Historic Gardens (1981).
-Interpretation and presentation of cultural landscapes. Examples of conservation and rehabilitation.
- Management and safeguarding plans.

Heritage Management
- Cultural heritage management.
-Organizations, charters, recommendations and legislation. National and international context.
-Communication, education and dissemination of heritage.

Analysis and Risk Management
-Analysis and risk management in built heritage. Directives for the preparation of a risk management plan.
- Prevention as a tool of risk management in built heritage.
- Recommendations for inspection, diagnosis and structural intervention.

Based on the study of a specific area of the city of Porto, this curricular unit proposes, in interdisciplinary groups,  the elaboration of contents of a Management Plan for heritage safeguarding and valorization  that, by the application of knowledge, will allow to test student’s capabilities, namely: historical and urbanistic framework; survey, analysis, interpretation; identification of heritage and landscape values; management and risk assessment; program, project and intervention proposal; synthesis, communication and dissemination.

Tutorial orientation sessions are intended to accompany work and to deepen the syllabus.

This training unit also develops with the occasional participation of guests, practical exercises, confrontation with examples or debate, encouraging interaction with the work developed. These initiatives aim to provide students with contact with real and external issues to the University, bringing together various disciplinary fields, institutions and actors.

It is also noted the exploration of new technologies and pedagogical practices (video, photography, interdisciplinary work).
