Objectives

The discipline of Urban Economics aims to introduce a theoretical approach to some recurring themes of urban analysis perspective that allows framing the constraints posed by the economic structure of society to intervene in the city and the issues arising from the interaction of the urban system in the economic system.
The development of the subjects chosen shall be subject to optical proposed by economic theory, using disciplinary concepts that establish economic categories which are intended to identify such elements characterizing the process of urban transformation in contemporary society.

Learning outcomes and competences

We intend to stimulate, on the student, the understanding of the economic phenomena as elements of urban policy, as well as the understanding of the way the working mechanisms operate the in the urban transformation processes and real estate markets.

1 - Introduction
Economic thought as a factor in the analysis of the dynamics of urban systems.
The economic science as a body separate disciplinary analysis of urban variables.
2 - From City to Metropolis: the organization of space in the context of social dynamics.
The inter-regional urban network and the transformation of the city.
Models of economic development and qualification of urban space.
3 - The right to life of the city limits.
The new forms and the transformation of urban values​​.
Valuing soil and major urban projects in the construction of the city.
The production of space and the income of urban land.
4 - Who decides or the intervention of agents of transformation in search of models and images to feed the urban market.
The construction of models for city transformation and the new elements of space qualification.
Urban policies, decision-making and management intervention.
The unevenness of the ground and the market.
5 - The dynamics of the urban system and the issue of alternative policies.
Dynamic metropolitan, urban planning and the distribution of income in the life cycle of cities.
Obsolescence of "productive basins" and the role of "innovation" in the spatial reorganization of the activities.
Potential conversion of metropolitan areas: new urban centrality and new ideologies.

Teaching methods and learning activities

We will be pursuing a teaching expository, attempting to stimulate debate on the issues raised by the theoretical approach oriented to deepen the reflection on the various interactions in question, namely the interaction area / city that is intended as educational objective of the 5th year in general programming course . Search will foster such debate through the critical strategy planning and urban intervention proposal in the practical work of Project V.
As discussion on the topics presented, which will report instruments urban intervention, prompted a report of identification and analysis of urban-economic variables that determine the process of restructuring of metropolitan areas given the changes occurring in their "centers" and a study of the functioning of the rules by which agents are guided in their activity of urban farmers urban values​​.
Understanding the educational process as one that aims not only to transmit knowledge but also the development of student skills and encouraging the ability to discuss and question, it follows a methodology that seeks the active participation of the student in the educational process, including creating conditions for teacher-student dialogue.

Eligibility for exams

The evaluation of the use will be based on critical skills demonstrated in two papers requested and contributing to the debate that is established based on the exposure of the themes and literature recommended, depending on the final evaluation of joint work with the methodology analysis and intervention proposal in the 5th year.

The completion of the exercises should take place outside the space of class and student monitoring is carried out during office hours.

Calculation formula of final grade

The classification is obtained by averaging the scores of practical exercises.
