Objectives

Because this course is occurring during the propaedeutic year of studies, it aims to:
- approach the generic problematics of Architecture;
- manage the basic tools for projecting;
- introduce students to project methodology.

Learning outcomes and competences

Use of the mechanisms of spatial composition oriented to the search of essentiality. Ability to reflect on the experienced practices.

Working method

Presencial

Program

Throughout the performance of practical exercises, the student will resort to intuition in order to discover the use of forms and spaces resulting therefrom, in time, he/she will be expected to show a growing and systematic rationalisation which contributes to cohesion between the idea and the proposal. This attitude must therefore lead to a progressive search for logic and rigour which allows for a general approach to construction aspects.
There will be three practical assignments, aimed at complementary objectives:
1ST EXERCISE (STAGE 1)
- structure and composition (mass, emptiness, rhythm, tension, contrast, balance, unity);
- dimension, scale;
- time;
- light;
- symbolism;
- built space and natural space;
- centripetal and centrifugal spaces.

1ST EXERCISE (STAGE 2)
- relation between inner and outer spaces;
- border elements;
- the logic of the geometries in the spatial composition.

2nd EXERCISE
- exploring the concepts of composition, measurement and module;
- built space and natural space;
- contextualising.

3rd EXERCISE
- interpreting a program;
- functions and character of the space;
- sensibility towards the plastic characteristics of materials;
- introduction to the problems of structural and constructive  feasibility.
- the identity of spaces in complex compositions;
- three-dimensionality as an objective and two-dimensionalityas a tool.

Teaching methods and learning activities

By dealing with themes ranging from territory to “architectural object”, the student should progress in experience and enrich his/her intuition by means of a systematic reflection substantiated by theoretical reflection, debate and exposition in classes and supported in technical terms by the teacher.

The type and sequence of the practical architecture assignments together with the theoretical information will allow the student to apprehend the overall parameters of space organisation.

The syllabus comprehends the execution of three practical exercises, the first being divided into two stages. There may be interim assistance exercises for different partial concretions.

The first exercise aims at:
- unblocking the ability to represent and explore the space;
- becoming aware of the role of drawing in investigating the space;
- using the process itself as a means of continuous assessment.

The second exercise aims at:
- becoming aware of the importance of real context;
- approaching the questions of systematisation and order.

The third exercise aims at:
- touching project methodology;
- increasing the rigour in processes of space representation.

Evaluation Type

designation Time (hours)
Elaboração de projeto 16,60
Estudo autónomo 16,60
Frequência das aulas 16,60
Trabalho de campo 16,60
Trabalho de investigação 16,60
Trabalho laboratorial 17,00
Total: 100,00

Eligibility for exams

Evaluation will be distributed without final exam, thus based on individual and group assignments and in-class participation.

There are three different and complementary components to the evaluation process:

a) continuous: collective and individualised critical appraisal to on-going practical assignments; in-class participation.

b) specific: compared critical appraisal at specific points of the practical exercise in progress.

c) global assessment of the work completed in each term and throughout the year, given a final mark.

Calculation formula of final grade

The final mark will result from the combination of the last practical exercise’s evaluation with the rest of the results obtained by the student throughout the year. Therefore, the final course grade will not obey purely arithmetic criteria, yet favour the evolution shown by the student.

Considering the nature of this course – without final exam – special term exams will not take place.

All students must attend the mandatory percentage of classes defined in Art. 8 of deliberation 1536/2005 (University of Porto).

The lack of one or more evaluation components will result in a negative grade for the student.

Classification improvement

In case the student requires an improvement of the final grade, the process will only take place the following year.

Observations

Being a first-year course, precedence rules do not apply.
