Objectives

1 Theoretical and Critical knowledge required for the design of significant public spaces, that is, socialy inclusive, composed by all kinds of buildings, urban infrastructures and natural forms.
2 Experimental research and personal thinking are essential conditions for theoretical work, and must be practiced with the instruments of architecture (hand and computers design, measure, mathematics, photography, graphic design for image and text edition ), bibliography and iconography , location and search of primary sources of data (archives, personal interviews).
3 State of the art about Public Space design, through empirical studies of Portuguese or foreign cases, as an exercise of methodical search for universal laws of Architecture, for circumstantial reasons, for strategies of responsive innovation both in buildings and urbanism.
4 Student must be able to formulate, in a clear way, critical arguments of architecture supported by emprical work results, under the form of a research project.
Case study will be chosen by the student but necessarily visited.

Domain of the disciplinary instruments of architecture (plan, section and model) aplied to the forms of public space.

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Observation drawing, CAD and modeling.

Program

1. Public space as a physical reality. Public Space as an architectonic category.
2.  Identity, urbanity and citizenship.
3. Research instruments and methods for an urban or architectonic fact. Theory and project strategy. Review and construction of new concepts. New thought and personal identity - the individual and his case.
4. Figurative, constructive and economic consistency in urban design and their material and architectonic expression. 
5. About Scale and Site layout – compromises of the building towards the public space. Buildings in the urban scene. 
6. Formal consistency and Economy of the means of expression. Contribution of the building systems to the Resistance of architecture. Amplification of the classical concept of “firmitas”. The arguments of construction perfection and technical innovation. 
7. Interdependence of building projects and their exterior spaces. All architecture stands in the Public Space.

Presentation of preliminary results of case study in class with (psm) portable space model ( 1.200, white cardboard, foldable to A4 size)
At lesat one written exercise on subjet proposed in class.
Repport of case study as a research project - Electronic in CD or Pendrive and one printed version max DIN A4.

Spanish, French, English and italian will be accepted in class,
Bilingual edition of the final work will be requested in portuguese and one of the above idioms.
