Abstract (EN): The purpose of this study was to explore the advantages of understanding linguistic phenomena of colloquial forms expressed and registered in beginner-level students of Portuguese as a Foreign Language. Recorded conversations between native speakers (NSs) of European Portuguese (PEC) and non-native speakers (NNSs) of the A1.2 level were analysed to 1) verify the presence of vague language (VL) and evaluate its significance; 2) compare its use between NSs and NNSs; 3) determine if its use compromises communication; and 4) evaluate factors that influence its use. This study was designed to verify our hypothesis without claim to general validity.
