Summary: |
Maritime transport plays a central role on the transport sector sustainability, even more now that the Atlantic Area Transnational Programme (AATP) is one of EU priorities, as well as it is of Portugal. Accordingly, it becomes highly important to evaluate atmospheric
pollutant emissions from ships and its impact on environment and health. As far as known, in Portugal there are no publications and there is only one project, recently financed, in the area, aside from the national emissions inventory by the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), being knowledge still in its infancy. Thus, this study intends to contribute to understand ship emissions role on the overall air pollution and on human health. The expected results are developing a shipping emissions inventory for Portugal and Spain, forecasting atmospheric emissions for 2030 and 2050, evaluating human exposure to shipping emissions, and evaluating possible impact on asthma through a questionnaire based survey to cases and controls. |
