Professor at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP).

Habilitation in Architecture, University of Porto (2014), Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, University of Porto (1991), Master in Structural Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto (1985) and Graduated in Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto (1977).

Faculty member of FAUP since 1986. Between 1978 and 1986, was assistant professor at the School of Fine Arts of Porto (Architecture department). His teaching activity has also been extended to other Public Institutions of Higher Education, namely, Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, School of Engineering of the University of Minho and School of Science and Technology of the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, through specific collaborations, mainly in the context of postgraduate courses.

Presently, it is member of, both, the Representatives Council and the Scientific Board of FAUP, exercising also, at the same institution, the functions of director of the Center of Studies of the Faculty of Architecture (CEFA) and, in the academic plan, of director of the Architectural Heritage advanced studies course (third cycle of studies).

The research activity developed, at an early stage, was focused in the field of Computational Mechanics and, more specifically, in the study and development of numerical models for the nonlinear analysis of concrete structures.

Currently, the research interests fall, mainly, in the area of Conservation and Rehabilitation of Ancient Buildings, focusing, in particular, on the study of the structural and building system of ordinary buildings, built up between the 19th and 20th centuries – aiming the establishment of intervention methodologies for their rehabilitation –, as well as in themes that are enrolled in the field of History of Construction.

In the context of his scientific activity, has been participating in several research projects, in some of them as coordinator.

Scientific supervisor of M.Sc. dissertations, Ph.D. thesis and post-doctoral studies.

Author or co-author of publications in books, chapters of books, articles in scientific journals, papers in conference proceedings, etc.

Invited speaker at several scientific events and member of different scientific organizations and committees, namely, ICOMOS – Portugal (member of the National Advisory Council), ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Shared Built Heritage (ICOMOS ISC–SBH) and DOCOMOMO – International Specialist Committee on Technology (ISC/T), among others.
