Objectives

To develop advanced knowledge and competences in children and youth swimming training and scientific research, particularly in the areas of training planning, evaluation, control and training advice, management of a swimming team, and identification and development of the performance factors.

Learning outcomes and competences

Students will be able to: (i) have advanced skills as a swimming coach of children and youth; (ii) acquire competences on building, implementing and evaluating long term sport projects for children and youth; (iii) develop a critical analysis of the field related practical problems, being able to answer in a pedagogic and scientific manner; (iv) develop the learning autonomy by being able to assess diverse sources of knowledge; (v) act critically in the competitive sport domain, showing  an entrepreneur and positive mind for implementing good practices.

  1. Swimming performance factors.

  2. State of the art on the training of the swimming performance factors particularly regarding the motor skills of children and youth swimmers.

  3. Sport management of a swimming team, carer plan and educational follow up for long term sport.

  4. Training control and identification of situations of early overload training.

  5. Talents identification.

  6. Administration of competitive engagement in the different steps of training of the young swimmers.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical and practical lessons with presentation and discussion of contents supported by scientific research and from age-group training practical outcomes. It is encouraged an autonomous and tutorial work of the students. Curricular unit centered on the students work, with the tutored learning being high applied. The teaching methodologies allows the transmission of knowledge through students active participation, either by the previous preparation of syllabus, as by the reflective and interactive discussion with teachers, allowing a better understanding and retention of contents, and contributing to the development of declarative knowledge. Teaching methodologies are centered in habits of methodic doubt, research, reflection, rationale and actualization. It is aimed to implement habits of reflection and scientific study, allowing know how and experience in the domain of training and competing at the field, as well as of research scientific domain. These skills are considered determinant for the profile of the future master in sports training, essencial for solving with success future tasks.

Eligibility for exams

Participation with final exam, with terms of frequency of 75% of presence at the summarized classes (students with special frequency will be required a special exam to ensure the acquisition of knowledge and competencies related to the purposes and contents of the curricular unit).

Calculation formula of final grade

Calculation of the final classification is done taking into account the following factors: (i) participation in the practice in real context (20%) and (ii) final work(80%). In both assessment components students will have to obtain a minimum grade of 9.5 points. An oral exam may be required to confirm grades above 14 points.
