Objectives

The main purpose of the History of Sports is to provide the essential skills that enable students to develop the ability to relate the themes of the History of Sports with the discussion of current issues in sport as well as the issues about its future development. It is also aimed that students develop skills in literature research and identify the sources and methods of the History of Sports.
Aims of the course:
1) To reflect on the importance of the History of Sports in the context of Sport Sciences.

2) To understand the sports culture along the historical process, concerning the most important societies of each historical period.
3) To know the settings about the different paradigms of contemporary sport.

Learning outcomes and competences

As a result of learning, it is intended that at the end of the semester students have acquired competence in the field of communication and knowledge of the course of History of Sport.

Syllabus

1-History of Sports as a scientific discipline anas a subfield of Sport Sciences.
2-Theories about the origin of the sports. The complexity of the concept sport.
3-Sport in early civilizations: Mesopotamia, Egypt and China.
4-Sport in the classical world: Greek and Roman civilizations. Major sporting festivals in Greece. Olympic Games of antiquity. Rome and major sporting events.
5-From the classical world and the industrial revolution: the physical practices of the Middle Ages. The Renaissance humanists and the positions of education before the body. Principal authors of the Renaissance related to Physical Education. Physical activity and sport in the Ancien Régime.
6-Birth, development and consolidation of modern sport. Olympism and Modern Olympic Games.
7-Sports in Portugal. The emergence of the sporting system.
8-Between the twentieth and the twenty-first century. New socio-cultural manifestations of sports.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Despite the formal nature of the lessons is theoretical, the teaching methodology tries to focus on students, developing the need for research and critical reflection on the topics addressed. It is used expositive form also as analysis and discussion of texts, pictures and specialized historical films.

Eligibility for exams

It is required frequency at least 75% of the classes taught.
Students who have obtained it in the previous academic year, as well as the cases provided for by law, namely student workers, are exempt from attendance.

Calculation formula of final grade

Distributed evaluation (two tests) or final exam. Minimum grade for each test: 7,5.
Final grade: Simple average of the classification tests (minimum score of 9,5) or classification of the final exam (minimum score of 9,5).
