- To know performance sport and the specific sociologic context of swimming
- To know the actual state of the art in the field of the determinant factors of swimming performance
- To apply the knowledge previously acquired relative to the nature, processes of development and control of the different factors of performance in swimming, aiming high level performances in competition
- To develop practical competencies for the intervention at the levels of planning, direction, control and evaluation of swimming training, and competitive direction of swimmers and swimming teams.
After the theoretical specific education provided during the curricular unit Sport Methodology I, the programmatic contents (Syllabus) referred beforehand (inclusion of students in a specific regime of education in the task, functioning in top level national swimming teams) constitutes the optimized pedagogical solution for the development of the knowledge of the sport, of the factors constraining its performance and the strategies to develop them, as well as to the development of the practical competencies associated to the conception, planning, guidance, and evaluation of the training and competition processes, bringing together the “knowing how to do” and the “knowing to be” to the “knowledge” itself. The development and discussion of “hot” topics, as well as the open and free debate about the difficulties of the established knowledge to face all the exigencies of the daily professional life reinforces, in a very expressive way, the value of this pedagogical solution.
The curricular unit (CU) functions like “learning in the task” as a Sport Training Centre (STC), being the student’s activities tutored by an habilitated top level swimming coach and supervised by the university professors responsible for the CU. To allow this educational profile, the students are allocated to a technical team of a swimming club, progressively facing the tasks, the necessary knowledge and competencies to reach success in this professional exercise. Students are also oriented to recognize the research needs for a more complete foundation of the training process. Weekly, the students of the different Swimming STC get together with the professor responsible. In these sessions, particular and pertinent topics are developed by invited personalities, as well as by the professors. Details of the professional exercise sessions are deeply discussed, and training and competition performance of teams, coaches, swimmers, and students are discussed.
The teaching methodology is based on the concept of education during tutored and supervised professional practice. Invited conferences, seminars, and debates are complements to the education during practice. The critical analysis of documents, experiences, testimonies, etc., resulting in the construction of a working dossier, is also a fundamental tool of the curricular unit.
