Abstract (EN):
Investigations of upper limb muscle activation during reach tasks available in the literature are not for rotator cuff injury. Yet, the small body of literature on upper limb muscle activation during these tasks does not include any systematic study on the influence of each shoulder test. Tests such as Belly press, Drop arm, Empty can, Full Can and Hawkins are often used in the clinic, for decision-making in clinical diagnosis, but these tests lack uniformity, validity, and reliability. The aim of this case study is to analyze the sequence activation behavior during the five rotator cuff tests, making use of kinematic and EMG. One patient female, 60 years old, 61.80 kg body mass, 1.52 m height, 26.75 kg/m2 BMI, right-handed, with physiotherapy treatment not efficient, pain more than 24 months due to rotator cuff injury on the right shoulder with a grade 9 concerning pain on VAS_Pain and 57.80 for the DASH scale. The left upper limb was healthy. Surface electrodes (Trigno, Delsys Inc., USA) were used for electromyographic recording of the activation of the four muscles biceps brachii, infraspinatus, upper trapezius, and lower trapezius synchronized with the 3D motion capture system (Qualisys AB, Sweden). The results pointed to the bigger Peak EMG observed at the biceps brachii, in all tests, except for the Hawkins, related to the kind of contraction requested by the test. The number of Peak EMG seems to confirm the positive test. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.
