Details
Summary: Magnetocaloric refrigeration is one of the most promising alternatives to the ubiquitous vapor compression refrigerators due to its substantially larger coefficient of performance (COP). The goal of this project
is to demonstrate the applicability of a novel thermodynamic cycle that uses, for the first time, the demagnetizing effect of solid state magnetocaloric materials (MCMs) to surpass the main limitations still
preventing this alternative refrigeration technique to become a mainstream technology. This cycle opens the possibility of using more compact rotating permanent magnets in magnetocaloric refrigerators,
which has been a key factor for the delaying of their mass commercialization.
One of the goals of the 2030 United Nations agenda for sustainable development is to "ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all". One way for energy consumption to
become more sustainable is to increase the energy efficiency of heat management devices, such as heating and cooling devices. In this context, magnetocaloric systems have been pointed out as a reliable
alternative to the vapor compression technology for heat pumps and refrigerators [Greco2019,Kitanovski2020]. In fact, while the efficiency of vapor compression systems can attain no more than 15% of the
Carnot efficiency, magnetocaloric systems can reach values up to 60% [Yu2010]. Magnetocaloric systems rely on magnetizing MCMs to create temperature gradients, instead of compressing and expanding
Results: No projeto proposto, um refrigerador magnetocalórico será totalmente modelado e otimizado numa abordagem multi-física.
