Details
Summary: The purpose of this proposed novel research is to explore the necessary new methodologies on Modified Calcium Phosphate (MCP) materials for antibacterial and osteogenic behaviour in biomedical applications. Indeed, novel Modified Calcium Phosphate (MCP) materials research and their applications are essential for the health issues related with currently aging population. In future, it is expected that our proposed MCP approach, is an alternative method for antibacterial and osteogenic studies in bone- implant integration in vivo.
Objectives of the Project: Larger bone defects resulting from trauma, tumour resection, non-union of fractures and congenital malformations are common clinical problems. Because of the limitations associated to the use of autografts, allograft and xenografts the development and applications of synthetic bone grafts is a market-driver in biomaterials field.
The addition of small amounts of CaO-P2O5 glasses to hydroxyapatite is an expedite strategy to incorporate ions into structure of calcium phosphate phases, attaining a final composite material with a chemical composition closer to the inorganic composition of bone, and superior biocompatibility and mechanical properties than pure phase hydroxyapatite or tricalcium phosphate currently used in clinical applications.
In this work CaO-P2O5 based glass doped with Ag, Cu and Lanthanides that confer antimicrobial properties, as well as with Si, elements that promote bone regeneration, will be added to hydroxyapatite. These novel modified calcium phosphates (MCP) will combine the synergetic effect of antimicrobial and osteocompatibility behaviour.
