PHD Physical Activity and Health

The PhD Program in Physical Activity and Health of the Faculty of Sport at the University of Porto was created in 2004 (Decision 1299/2004; published in the Diário da Républica Nº. 259/2004, Series II of 2004-11-04). The PhD program Physical Activity and Health is in accordance with the national law for this study cycle (Law 74/2006, 24th March), and awards the PhD degree in Physical Activity and Health by the University of Porto.

The duration of the PhD program in Physical Activity and Health, in full time attendance regimen, is three years (180 ECTS). The course curriculum of the PhD program in Physical Activity and Health consists of compulsory curricular component (two semesters in the first year, 60 ECTS). The program leading to the PhD degree in Physical Activity and Health entails the preparation of an original thesis and its subsequent presentation, public discussion and evaluation by an independent committee (four semesters, 120 ECTS), which may consist of several original articles published in international scientific journal peer-reviewed.


Objectives

The PhD program in Physical Activity and Health aims to provide students with skills needed for the knowledge production in the area of health-related physical activity, always guided by values of proficiency, efficacy, commitment and teamwork, as well as acting in respect for ethical principles. Consequently, the main component of the course will be the preparation of a thesis, which must include original findings certifying the applicant's ability to undertake research work of high quality standards, with a clear contribution to promote the knowledge in the field of health-related physical activity, being this knowledge disclosed to the scientific community through publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Furthermore, the program also aims to enable students to communicate with their peers and the academic community.


Professional Abilities

At the end of the program, it is intended that students demonstrate:

  1. a) The ability to systematically understand the scientific field;
  2. b) research skills and methods associated with the scientific field;
  3. c) the ability to conceive, design, adapt and carry out significant research respecting the

requirements imposed by the academic quality and integrity;

  1. d) have made a significant set of original research work, contributing to extending the frontiers of knowledge, part of which deserves international publicity in publications with peer review;
  2. e) Be able to critically analyse, evaluate and synthesize new and complex ideas;
  3. f) be able to communicate with their peers, the academic community and society in general about the area in which they specialize;
  4. g) To be able to promote, in academic and/or professional context, technological, social or cultural progress.

Entry requirements

  1. a) To hold a master's degree or legal equivalent in Sports Sciences or related areas;
  2. b) Those holding a Bachelor degree in the above-mentioned areas with a especially relevant academic or scientific curriculum recognized by the Scientific Board as evidence of the ability to complete this PhD program;
  3. c) Those having an academic, scientific or professional curriculum recognized by the Scientific Board as evidence of the ability to complete this course
  4. d) To have good skills in spoken and written English language.
