Sports have an undeniable cultural, social and economic importance either in Portugal or in any other country of different continents.

 

The one who watches, plans, practices and communicates in sport industry is aware that behind the 'records', the sports spectacle, the recreational practice or even informal sports activity are the sports organizations, infrastructure and human resources that have to be managed and maximized. Obviously, sport, like any other social field, has to be planned, organized, led and controlled, even taking into account their specificities.

 

It is undeniable that in Portugal, at the dawn of the XXI century, the sports management has moved from a phase of growth and affirmation respect to previous decades, to a consolidation phase at various levels. This is a sector of professional growth, it is an area of vocational and college education at various levels, it has a rigorous research and, finally, it has gained credibility in society. Internationally, the sports management is a reality in great expansion in some countries and regions (eg Brazil, Angola and Mozambique) and it is configured as a reality rooted and fully developed in others (eg Europe, US or Australia).


Therefore, to promote the development of sports, in which not only is valued knowledge and empirical practices, it is required the qualification professionals of high quality and specialized training. Consequently, due to the scientific, social and professional recognition of sports management, the existence of Master’s Degree that includes information and training of excellence in sports is fully justified, oriented to graduates in various scientific disciplines and for the continuous training of graduate professionals.


Objectives

Objectives and competences

The Master’s Degree in Sport Management aims to impart knowledge and develop skills in students in order to train them as managers capable of intervening in the national and international sports system in multiple sports organizations, or create their own projects and businesses.

 

The Master’s Degree in Sports at the University of Porto aims to meet the following key competences:

  1. To acquire a thorough knowledge of sports science, through the activity of research, innovation or development of professional skills.
  2. To develop the ability to understand and solve problems in new situations or broad multidisciplinary situations, either for research practice or to pursue the professional activity in sports management;
  3. To develop the ability to integrate knowledge, deal with complex issues, develop solutions and make judgments about situations of limited or incomplete information, including reflections on the implications and ethical and social responsibilities arising from their solutions and their judgements.
  4. To be able to communicate their findings, knowledge and reasoning underlying them, whether specialists or non-specialists, with clear speech and unambiguously.
  5. To obtain skills for independent learning throughout life.

 

The diversity, quality and prestige of the faculty allow to combine a solid theoretical basis with high ability to put in practice the skills and knowledge acquired by students.


Fields of Specialization

Among other aspects, we highlight the following areas: Planning and Strategy of Organizations; Planning and Management of sport facilities; Leadership of sports organizations; Policy advice; Communication and Marketing; Project management; Sports Regulations, Sports Administration; Management of sporting events; Managing professional development; economic management and Human resources management.


Employment Prospects

In the labor market there are positions in the field of sports management that can be covered through this qualification: Manager, Director, Consultant, Administrator, Assessor, Auditor, Professor, researcher, entrepreneur, and sports superior technician in various institutions such as:

 

  • Olympic and Paralympic Committees, Sports Federations, sports clubs and other organizations or associations;
  • Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs);
  • Central, regional or local government;
  • Public companies;
  • Gyms / Health Clubs;
  • Sport Services Companies (events, leisure and sports tourism, adventure sports and extreme sports activities, etc.);
  • Sporting goods companies;
  • Consulting firms in the field of sport;
  • Entities of Social Communication.

Information

Course duration:

The duration of the course is two semesters, plus a maximum period of one (1) year (two semesters) for the preparation of a thesis or to carry out an internship and the final report.

The regular duration of the course could exceed four semesters in the case of part-time students.

Facilities:

Academic activities are carried out at at Sports Sciences facilities at Dr. Plácido Costa, 91, 4200-450 Porto. It is possible to visit other sports facilities or institutions.

Period:

The course begins in September and ends in June.

Schedule:

Lessons will take place on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (18h00 to 22h00) and Saturday (09h00 to 13h00).
