With a scientific multidisciplinary approach, this curricular unit aims to provide students with the knowledge about the essence of human movement as well as its local (in the effector systems) and systemic impact (either acute or chronic). It is also intended to show how this knowledge has been constructed over time, with animal and human research, and its potential preventive and therapeutic applicability.
As a general purpose, this curricular unit aims to provide students with knowledge about the scientific/clinic evidences to prescribe exercise in movement disorders, giving special attention to:
- the effect of exercise as a tool in rehabilitation and secondary prevention in the contexts of pathology/disease;
- the transfer of knowledge from basic science obtained in laboratory scenery to clinical research;
- the research conducted in laboratory supporting the empirical evidence.
It is intended, with this curricular unit, to approach themes of Physiotherapy in specific conditions or specific populations. It aims to provide interdisciplinary concepts both in the conceptual domain and in terms of the methodological treatment applied to experimental research. It seeks to develop a thematic synthesis of the research area and domain of knowledge applied to physiotherapy and its relation to exercise as a health-promoting, preventive and/or therapeutic practice in this domain.
