- To know high performance swimming sport, and the specific context of swimming realisation
- To know the actual state of the art in the field of the determinant factors of swimming performance
- To apply the knowledge previously acquired relative to the nature, processes of development and evaluation of the different factors which determines high level swimming performance
- Develop more advanced practical skills (compared to the previous UC) that allow and sustain the coaching intervention on the domains of: planning, direction, control and evaluation of swimming training, and competitive direction of swimmers and swimming teams.
Students should:
- Meet and understand high performance swimming sport, and the specific context of swimming realisation
- Know the actual state of the art in the field of the determinant factors of swimming performance
- Show practical abilities and theoretical knowledge which allow and sustain coaching intervention on the domains of: planning, direction, control and evaluation of swimming training, and competitive direction of swimmers/players and swimming/water polo teams.
- The knowledge previously acquired in the Curricular Unit - Methodology I - Sport Training - Swimming, relative to the nature, processes of development and evaluation of the different factors which determines high level swimming performance
- The knowledge previously acquired in the Curricular Unit - Methodology II - Sport Training - Swimming, particulary centered on their activity in the clubs and the writen and/or oral critical thinking about the actuation.
The curricular unit functions like “learning in the task” as a Training Centre, being the students' activities tutored by a habilitated coach and supervised by the university professors responsible for the curricular unit. Students should select teams with which the responsible teachers(s) have a more effective connection. To allow this educational profile, the students are allocated to a technical team of a swimming, water polo or synchronized swimming club, progressively facing the tasks, the necessary knowledge and competencies to reach success in this professional exercise. Students are also oriented to recognize the research needs for a more complete foundation of the training process. Weekly, the students of the different training centers get together with the professor(s) responsible(s). In these sessions, particular and pertinent topics are developed by invited personalities, as well as by the professors. Details of the professional exercise sessions are deeply discussed, and the training and competition performance of teams, coaches, swimmers, and students are discussed.
The teaching methodology is based on the concept of education during tutored and supervised professional practice. Invited conferences, seminars, and debates are complements to the education during practice. The critical analysis of documents, experiences, testimonies, etc., resulting in the construction of a working dossier, is also a fundamental tool of the curricular unit.

For the acquisition of "frequency" the students need to be present in: (i) 75% of the delivered classes; (ii) three training units per week during the whole training season; (iii) all the competitions in which the team compete in the “big Porto” area. They further need to submit the “Training Dossier” 15 days before the oral examination.
Continuous assessment:
The assessment components for the students in Sport Training Centre regime, which need to be presented and orally discussed, are:
- Annual working plan (10%)
- Dossier of the Training Centre (40%)
- Personal report on the stage (10%)
- Intervention ability in training and competition (20%)
- Assiduity and participation in the formal teaching sessions (20%)
For the students that choose the alternative training plan, the assessment components that need to be presented and orally discussed are:
- Annual Plan of Work (15%)
- Dossier of Work (45%)
- Personal report on the activity (20%)
- Assiduity and participation in the formal teaching sessions (20%)
For each item, it is required a minimum mark of 7.5 over 20. A minimum mark of 10 over 20 is required to guarantee success.
In specific and duly justified cases.
The students are allocated to a technical team of a swimming club (preferably the same from the 1st semester), progressively facing the tasks and the necessary knowledge and competencies to reach success in this specific professional exercise. Students are also oriented to recognize the complementary research needs for a more complete foundation of the training process.
It can only be obtained through the presentation of new written documents that will be presented and orally discussed.
