Objectives

Students will gain advanced knowledge and competencies for the development of fundamental and applied biomechanical research (experimental and numerical) applied to the understanding of the fluids movements, and of the movements of solids performed inside fluid fields. The application of that knowledge and of the research techniques and methods associated will allow a better understanding of the swimming, gliding, planning and flying, as well as the mechanics of the flows of contented fluids, favoring the advanced understanding of the blood and other body fluids circulation, and the understanding of the effects of the flow around bodies and specific artifacts (balls, discus, weights, sails, boats, etc.)

Learning outcomes and competences

In accordance with the purposes of the curricular unit, the contents expressed at the Syllabus were organized to allow starting for the presentation, explanation and exemplification of the more fundamental principles that determines flow mechanics. From them, students are able to discriminate the movements in stable, quasistable, and unstable flow conditions, and the necessary specific answers in these circumstances, both for swimming and flying. Transfers for the study of blood circulation and for the movement of sports apparatus (balls, discus, sails, boats, etc.) within fluid fields will be promoted. The Computational Flow Dynamics (CFD) will be presented as a numerical simulation and research tool in this domain, and the comparison of results with experimental hydrodynamics will allow the reinforcement of the critical capacity of the students regarding the advanced methods for scientific research in this field.
