Abstract (EN): In recent years, we have witnessed advances in the understanding of molecular events that lead to breast cancer. This knowledge allowed, among other things, the development of novel therapies that target critical pathways involved in this disease. One of these pathways is the PI3K pathway, whose signaling axis has implications on cancer cell growth, survival, motility and metabolism. In the present review, the potential role of PI3K inhibitors in the treatment of breast cancer is discussed. The fast pace of development of these drugs urges the discussion on the advantages and pitfalls of their application and impact in the future therapy of breast cancer.
