Abstract (EN): Peripheral nerve injuries affect trauma patients worldwide and often lead to life-long disabilities. Their repair represents a challenge to surgeons. Neurotmetic injuries, the most severe cases of nerve injuries, can be surgically treated with tensionless sutures. When such technique is not possible, the gold standard technique, autografts, is applied. To overcome their limitations, tissue-engineered nerve guidance channels (NGCs) made of biomaterials have been developed. Since chitosan is one of the preferable candidates, discrete models of a chitosan NGC were developed and numerically analyzed using the finite element method and a meshless method. Stress and displacement fields were obtained to evaluate the mechanical behavior of the NGCs.
