Short-term exposure to somatostatin or muscarinic agonists regulates acetylcholine-evoked H-3-MPP+ release from bovine adrenal chromaffin cells

Abstract (EN): The present research examined the effect of a short-term exposure to somatostatin (SS) or to muscarinic receptor agonists upon acetylcholine (ACH)induced release of H-3-MPP+ from bovine adrenal medullary cells. Somatostatin (SS, 0.01-0.1 mu M) reproduced the effect of the muscarinic agonists, by depressing ACH-elicited H-3-MPP+ release by 25-27%, but only when a 500 mu M ACH concentration was used. The SS receptor (SSTR)2, 3 and 4 subtype agonists mimicked the effects of SS, and the SSTR non-selective antagonist counteracted its inhibitory effect. In the presence of either oxotremorine or pilocarpine the SS inhibitory effect on 500 mu M ACH-induced H-3-MPP+ release was no longer detectable. We conclude that SS and muscarinic agonists may share some signalling pathways involved in catecholamine (CA) handling.
