Abstract (EN): Lithium is a mineral with a powerful role in nowadays living paradigm, specially for being an insuperable component in the production of batteries to power electric vehicles. The trend for "clean" mobility is growing steadily, dragging an exponentially increase for lithium's demand. A country possessing lithium reserves faces an expected opportunity to grow and becomes a supplier, but there also "hidden" economic, social and specially environmental challenges. However, studies about this subject and mainly related to quantitative results are scarce. Therefore, this paper intends to be a preliminary attempt to understand the economic and social benefits for a country of being in possession of lithium reserves and weight the eventual problems deriving from the externalities that some stages of the Life Cycle of this metal can bring. We concretize this situation, for the case of Portugal, the biggest potential lithium producer in Europe, namely the region of Barroso-Alvao in the North, a very recent challenge for the country.
