Casa-museu José Teixeira LopesJosé Joaquim Teixeira Lopes Júnior was born in Porto, in Santo Ildefonso parish, on 28 January 1872. He was the son of ceramist and sculptor José Joaquim Teixeira Lopes and Raquel Pereira Meireles Teixeira Lopes, and brother of sculptor António Teixeira Lopes.

In 1885, he enrolled in the Porto School of Fine Arts, and concluded the 5th year in the Architecture course during the academic year 1891-1892 and, at the same time, the 5th year in Historical Drawing.

In 1892, he left for Paris to further his studies. He met his brother there and began preparing for the "Beaux-Arts" competition in the Blondel workshop, which was likewise attended by Adães Bermudes.

Túmulo de Almeida GarrettHe returned to Portugal in 1897, and split his time working in the country and in Brazil. Some of his most important work includes the Casa-museu Teixeira Lopes (1898), in Vila Nova de Gaia; the Modern Institute (1915), in the Quinta da Bela-Vista, S. Roque da Lameira, for which he received an award by the Porto City Hall; the project for the head-office of the Bank of Portugal, in Porto, a joint work with Ventura Terra; the urban plans for the Miramar seaside resort, in Vila Nova de Gaia; and the construction of several beach houses. He was also the author of the small neo-Manueline palace between the Brasil Avenue and Gondarém Street, in the Foz do Douro area, in Porto, known as Casa do Relógio (Clock House), projected for Artur Guimarães, and a bank in Praça de Almeida Garrett, in Porto. Other major works include those done jointly with his brother António Teixeira Lopes, for instance, the Military Museum (Lisbon, 1895-1908), the tomb of Almeida Garrett, and the mausoleum of Oliveira Martins, in the Prazeres Cemetery, in Lisbon.

Palacete Neomanuelino de Nevogilde, atribuído a José Teixeira LopesJosé Joaquim Teixeira Lopes Júnior joined the Porto Society of Fine Arts, founded in 1906, where he held some management functions. In 1908, the magazine entitled "A Architectura Portuguesa" linked Teixeira Lopes Júnior, together with Ventura Terra, Adães Bermudes and Marques da Silva, to the "modern architecture movement" of the Porto School, and considered him to be one of the key persons responsible for reshaping the "Portuguese House", on a par with Raul Lino.

The architect was married to painter and lecturer Ernestina Teixeira Lopes. He died in 1919.
