The U.Porto is the largest Portuguese scientific research institution that hosts research, development and innovation (R&D+i) groups of the various disciplines, from humanities to sciences and technologies, reflecting the range of knowledge and skills of its fourteen organic units.
The groups are organised into sectoral centers of research which are mostly evaluated by international panels of independent experts in assessments carried out by the FCT (Foundation for Science and Technology).
The research centers are found in the organic units of the U.Porto, and often in interface associations involving, besides the U.Porto, several public and private entities, which promote the link between the R&D+i activities of the U.Porto and the community.
Some of the R&D+i centers of the U.Porto were integrated in Associated Laboratories - research units that show, in particular through the evaluation results, the ability to cooperate in a stable, competent and effective manner in the pursuit of specific objectives of the science and technology policy of the Portuguese Government.
The U.Porto seeks to establish itself as a Research University, in which teachers and students are involved in the process of creating knowledge and lifelong learning.
