Who can apply?

For admission to the 3rd cycle (doctorate) courses at the U.Porto, the applicant must fulfil one of these conditions:

  • Hold a masters degree or legal equivalent in one of the areas specified by the school/faculty;
  • Hold a bachelors degree and have an especially relevant academic or scientific curriculum;
  • Have an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that the U.Porto recognises as proof of ability to complete the course of study.

How to apply?

Applications to the U.Porto doctorate courses are submitted to the school/faculty of the U.Porto that the student wishes to apply for. It is the responsibility of each school/faculty to establish and announce the necessary procedures in advance (documents, deadlines, vacancies, placement criteria, etc.).

For the 2015/2016 academic year, the U.Porto faculties have 1,425 vacancies (subject to change) for 86 different 3rd cycle (doctorate) courses. Check the mapa de vagas.

Tuition fees

For the 2016/2017 academic year, the annual tuition fee base value for doctorate courses at the U.Porto (in full time) is 2,750 Euro (+1.95 Euro for academic insurance).  The annual tuition fee for students covered by the International Student Statute (EEI) is defined by each U.Porto faculty (according to the real cost of the course) and ranges from 3,000 Euro (¤3,000) to 8,500 Euro (¤8,500). Given the bonds between Portugal and the CPLP - Community of Portuguese Language Countries (Angola , Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Sao Tome and Principe and East Timor), a reduction of up to 50% may be applied to the tuition fee for students from those countries.
