Jayme Eduardo Rios de Sousa, son of Alice de Castro Rios de Sousa and Jaime de Sousa, was born in Porto in 1909. His sisters were Maria Alice and Maria Alzira Rios de Sousa.

He completed his studies with honours in Liceu Alexandre Herculano, Porto, and enrolled in the University of Porto in 1927. In 1930 he completed the degree in Mathematics at the Faculty of Sciences, with the final mark of 18 out of 20, and in 1933 he completed the degree in Electrical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, with the final mark of 17. During the Mathematics course, he was awarded the prizes "Gomes Teixeira" and "Gomes Ribeiro".

In June 1945, after completing his doctorate degree in Mathematical Sciences with the theses "Estudo de Alguns Funcionais e sua aplicação à Resolução de Equações de Derivadas Parciais", he received the title of Doctor. He was one of the 7 new doctors of the University of Porto who received the doctoral insignia in a public ceremony held on 16 June 1945, along with Joaquim Rodrigues Santos Júnior, Arnaldo Deodato Fonseca Roseira, Leopoldina Ferreira Paulo, Judite dos Santos Pereira, Joaquim Augusto Ribeiro Sarmento and José Ramos Bandeira.

In October 1949 he sat the public exams for the positions of tenure professor of the 1st group, 1st Department, submitting a thesis entitled "Questões de Axonometria Central". In December 1957, he competed for the position of extraordinary professor of the 1st group – Analysis and Geometry -, of the 1st Department (Mathematical Sciences), and was approved unanimously. At that time, he submitted a theses entitled "Estudo de algumas questões de Geometria e sua aplicação à Geometria de Lobatchevsky". He was appointed by Order of 27 December 1957, published in the Government Gazette (2nd Series, no. 17, of 21 January 1958), and was sworn in on the 22nd of the same month and year.
In 1963, after sitting the public exams and delivering a lecture entitled "Os deslocamentos no espaço riemaniano fundamental das anti-polaridades elípticas", he was appointed full professor of the 1st Group – Analysis and Geometry -, of the 1st Department – Mathematical Sciences.

Jaime Rios de Sousa com a equipa de hóquei em patins do CDUP, em 1967 / Jaime Rios de Sousa with the CDUP hockey team in 1967He held important positions at the University of Porto: he was part of the management Board of the University Sports Centre (CDUP) and of the Porto University Centre (CUP), created in the 40s for “Mocidade Portuguesa”; he represented the extraordinary professors and full professores of FCUP, was a member of the University Senate and director of the Faculty of Sciences between 1967 and 1971. He had the initiative to create the canteens and university residence halls, as well as the construction of the Multipurpose Sports Pavilion "Prof. Galvão Teles" and the residence hall "Engenheiro Fernando Serrão".

Jayme Rios de Souza participated in many national and international scientific meetings, for e.g., the Portuguese-Spanish congresses for the advancement of sciences and the Portuguese Engineering Congress in 1948. Among his many public speeches, we highlight the keynote address entitled "Geometrias Euclidianas e não Euclidianas", delivered at the Grand Hall of the Porto University Centre in 1946.

He went on study trips across Europe - Spain, France, Switzerland and Italy. He was responsible for the first course in Numerical Analysis taught at the University of Porto, for Sciences and Engineering students. He authored scientific works in his field of expertise, some of which in collaboration with Augusto Queirós, Rogério Sousa Nunes and António Fernando do Nascimento Ruivo, and also worked in the newspaper "Centro", of the Porto University Centre. He published educational books on Projective Geometry and Infinitesimal Calculus.

He worked as an engineer in STCP, and represented the government with Hidroelétrica do Norte de Portugal between 1947 and 1956, and with TAP.
He was a member of the Portuguese Association of Engineers, of the Portuguese Mathematics Association, of the Institute of Coimbra and of the Portuguese Group of History of Sciences. He was also awarded the Commendation of the Order of Public Education.

He died on 17 October 1971 at a private clinic in Paris. The coffin was carried by plane to Porto and kept at the Porto University Centre. After the religious ceremonies at the Church of Santíssimo Sacramento, Jayme Rios de Sousa was buried in the family grave in the burial ground belonging to the Order of Carmo, in the Agramonte Cemetery. During the funeral, the key of the coffin was carried by Major Paulo Durão, as the representative of the President of the Republic. At the University of Porto, the national flag was flown at half-mast.
