Architect

Januário Godinho de Almeida was born in Santa Maria da Válega, Ovar, on 26 August 1910. He was the son of António Godinho de Almeida and Albina de Jesus Lopes Godinho.

He studied Architecture at the Porto School of Fine Arts, between 1925 and 1930.

He received his diploma in Architecture eleven years later, presenting the project for the Parque-Vidago Hotel, which already showed his general concerns that were always on his mind throughout his professional life, such as the interpretation of the location, accessibilities, the relation between the landscape and the interior area, and the choice of materials.

Edifício Frigorífico do Peixe de Massarelos de Januário GodinhoIn the 30's (20th century), he started his traineeship, in collaboration with the Porto architect Rogério de Azevedo, and designed one of his most important projects – the Fish Market, in Massarelos –, which already shows the influences of the Dutch Neoplasticism Art Deco.

Edifício da Estaçao União Eléctrica PortuguesaThroughout his career he walked away from some of the most recurring themes in Central Europa, choosing a style that combined modern and contemporary features, tradition and the location, and which was a first sign of the critical regionalism.

Pousada da Barragem de Venda Nova (HICA)He worked all over Portugal in different architecture and urban plans. We have to refer the constructions for the company Hidroeléctrica do Cávado (in the 40s and 60s), the "pousadas" in the north of the country, housing blocks, Law Courts, for e.g., the one in Vila do Conde (1953), several markets, for e.g., in Ovar (1950), the City Hall and the Law House in Vila Nova de Famalicão (1961), the Estação da União Eléctrica Portuguesa, no Porto (in the 50's and 60's), and urban planning projects for Baixa de Amarante (1965), and Coimbra (1968).

Januário Godinho died in Porto, in 1990.
