e-U/eduroam Infrastructure in the U.PORTO
Configurations to access eduroam networkAfter the 11th of April 2012, to access the eduroam wireless network it will be necessary to use an equipment compliant with the 802.11a/b/g/n, WPA2-AES and 802.1x IEEE standards. Configuration of the wireless network after the 11th of April: - SSID: eduroam Encryption method: WPA2 Cypher method: AES Install and configure a 802.1x supplicant with your wireless access credencials, using the EAP-TTLS and PAP authentication methods. Automatic configuration files to configure eduroam access all across the U.Porto campus, for the after 11th of April scennario, are available at the atlas.up.pt>eduroam webpage. We recommend the use of the automatic configuration files for simplicity and ease. Just follow the presented steps and introduce your access credencials when asked. Don't forget that the username should contain the full domain of the institution that the user belongs to (ex: user@institution.up.pt). If you chose to configure the access to the eduroam network manualy, just follow the instructions presented bellow acording to you operating system: WindowsSecureW2 DownloadConfiguração eduroam WPA2 em Windows 7 e Vista Configuração eduroam WPA2 em Windows XP SP3 LinuxConfiguração eduroam WPA2 em Linux UBUNTU MacOSConfiguração eduroam WPA2 em MacOSX Lion
The University of Porto participated in the e-U Campus Virtual initiative, a project supported by POSI (acronym for Programa Operacional da Sociedade de Informação - Operational Programme for the Information Society, coordinated by UMIC (acronym for Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento - Agency for the Knowledge Society), and developed and managed by the FCCN (acronym for Fundação para a Computação Científica Nacional - Foundation for National Scientific Computing). In the University of Porto, the project coveres all 14 Faculties, and the Business School EGP-UPBS, the Rectory and 9 Residence Halls. The local configurations of this infrastructure, which depend on the specific conditions in each institution, are the responsibility of the relevant Computing Services, who publicize the Wi-Fi services available to the academic community. The information on the coverage maps and the services available in each U.Porto Organic Unit is listed below:
Expansion to the eduroam European InitiativeDue to the growing number of students moving throughout Europe and their requirements in terms of mobility, there is an increasing need to connect the Wi-Fi infrastructure created under project e-U Virtual Campus to the eduroam European initiative. The eduroam initiative (Education Roaming) is a TERENA project (acronym for Trans-European Research and Education Networking Association). Its main goal is to provide a mobility service between campuses to all the European academic community (already expanded to non-European countries). We have therefore developed the infrastructures created within the e-U Virtual Campus project and integrated them in the eduroam European network. Portuguese users have access (via roaming) to the wireless networks of various higher education institutions in the European Union, and the international users can likewise access the Portuguese infrastructures in a totally transparent way, provided the source institution participates in the e-U/eduroam project. The eduroam infrastructure is supported by equipment compatible with standard IEEE 802.11g, certified by WiFi Aliance. Standard IEEE 802.11g provides throughputs of up to 54 Mb/s, and at the same time guarantees compatibility with the network adapter of standard IEEE 802.11b (providing throughputs of 11 Mb/s). The users’ authentication protocol is IEEE 802.1x (EAP-TTLS and/or PEAP), and it uses standard WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) with TKIP (Temporal Key Integrity Protocol) as cipher algorithm. After the 11th of April 2012 the access infrastructure will migrate to the WPA2 encryption method with a AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) cypher, thus increasing the security level in the wireless access. At this same date, a system of certificate validation will be introduced and adopted at all of University of Porto institutions, allowing for a uniformization of the local configurations for all users.
