1879-1955
Teacher, Philologist and Writer

He was born on 1 May 1879, in Joane, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão. After completing his high school studies in Braga, he enrolled in the Faculty of Theology of the University of Coimbra, and graduated in Theology. He chose to teach Theology in high school, and taught at Évora High School between 1903 and 1913 in the 1st Group (Portuguese and Latin). During his stay in Évora, he was also appointed Curator of the Public Library of Évora, taking up office on 16 September 1907.

In 1913 he asked to be transferred to Rodrigues de Freitas High School in Porto, where he taught until he reached his retirement age, and his merit was acknowledged publically. In late 1922, he had to interrupt his teaching career to become Contract Professor of the 1st Group (Classical Philology) at the First Faculty of Arts of Porto, where he was responsible for the chairs of Greek Language and Literature, Latin Language and Literature and Comparative Grammar of Greek and Latin. Two years later, the government appointed him Ordinary Professor of the same Group (and later as Full Professor, under the 1926 Statutes of University Education). The Faculty Board awarded him the degree of Doctor of Letters – Classical Philology, on 19 April 1926.

Following the closing of the Faculty of Arts of Porto by Decree 15 365, of 12 April 1928, Francisco Torrinha returned to Rodrigues de Freitas High School at the end of the year. Later, he was hired to teach at the Faria Guimarães Industrial School, and became its director. He was also invited for the position of Full Professor of Classical Philology at the Faculty of Arts of Coimbra. Since he could not accept the invitation for health reasons, he remained at the Rodrigues de Freitas High School until he retired in 1949. He died in Porto on 16 October 1955.
