Nuno Lídio Pinto Rodrigues Grande was born in Vila Real on 23 February 1932.
He attended primary and secondary school (Liceu Camilo Castelo Branco) in his home town, and then moved to Porto.
In the academic year 1950-1951 he was admitted to the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, where he was taught by Professor Hernâni Bastos Monteiro (1891-1963). In 1957 he completed his degree and defended a thesis, scoring 19 out 20. He was then invited by his master to become voluntary assistant of Anatomy.
In 1965 he defended a doctorate theses entitled "Hipertensão Arterial Pulmonar – Contribuição Experimental" earning him a score of 19 out of 20. He was then called to the army and sent to the Military Hospital of Luanda, the capital of Angola. In this African city, he held various offices of great responsibility. He was the director of the Laboratory of Human Anatomy, of the Medical-Surgical Course of the University of Luanda, President of the Directorate of the Centre for the Study of Experimental Medicine, of the Scientific Research Institute of Angola (1965-1974), extraordinary professor of the University of Luanda (1970-1972) and director of the medical and Surgical Course in Medicine of the University of Luanda (1969-1973).
While working in Luanda and Porto, he took up office as 1st assistant of Topographical Anatomy of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Porto (17 September 1965), and was appointed Tenured Professor (1968) and Full professor of FMUP in 1970.
He was the President of the Society of Anatomy of Southern Africa, and of the 5th Congress promoted by this Society in 1973. During this Congress, he was elected Honorary Member of the Society. The Minister of Education appointed him member of the Study Committee that laid the foundations for the Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar, at the University of Porto (1974).
In the following years, Nuno Grande monitored the incorporation process of ICBAS as a member of the Establishment Committee (1975-1981); he presided the Portuguese Society of Anatomy (1988-1990), the Executive Board of ICBAS (1981-1983 and 1985-1987), the Assembly of Representatives of this Institute (1984), its Scientific Board (1987 and 1992) and the General Assembly of the Portuguese Association of General Practice and Family Healthcare. He also represented Portugal in the Medical Research Council of EEC (1984-1989), was a member of the Scientific Panel of OTAN, ARW ASI (1989-1991) and was a member of the Portuguese Academy of Medicine and consultant to the World Bank in the area of Health and Medical Education.
He was full retired professor of the Department of Normal Anatomy of ICBAS, Professor Emeritus of the University of Porto, President of the Advertising Association of Casa-Museu Abel Salazar, Vice-president of the European Group of Lymphology (EGL), responsible for a group involved in the morpho-functional research of the respiratory apparatus and of the cardiovascular structure, which is part of the Multidisciplinary Unit of Biomedical Research (UMIB), and held chair 5 as a member of the Portuguese Academy of Medicine.
His reputation as a researcher led him to be part of the editorial team of several scientific publications ("Revista Portuguesa de Clínica Geral", "Revista Portuguesa de Medicina Desportiva", "European Journal of Lymphology", "Surgical and Radiological Anatomy", "Health Care Analysis", "Health and Social Care in the Community").
He was a member of several scientific societies, such as the Association of Doctors, the Portuguese Society of Anatomy, the Portuguese Society of Immunology, the Portuguese Society of Anthropology and Ethnology, the Portuguese Society of Electronic Microscopy, the Portuguese Society of Natural Sciences, the Brazilian Society of Anatomy, the Luso-Hispano-American Anatomy Society, the Aerospace Medical Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Ohio Academy of Science, the International College of Angiology, the European Group of Lymphology, the International Society of Lymphology, the Association of Medical Deans of Europe; and also of the Scientific Council of the European Association of Clinical Anatomy and was visiting professor of the University of Zhen-Jang.
He was also Pro-rector of the University of Porto for social affairs (since 1988), Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Foundation Casa da Cultura de Língua Portuguesa, President of the Portuguese Conferences on Medical Information (since 1978), Vice-president of the Conferences on Geriatric Medicine of the North (since 1985) and founding member of the Portuguese Association of General Practitioners.
With regard to his civic activity, he was the national representative for the candidacy of engineer Lurdes Pintassilgo to the Presidency of the Republic (1985) and member of the Luso-Norwegian Joint Committee for the implementation of Primary health Care in the District of Vila Real. He collaborated with the University of Beira Interior in the creation of the Faculty of Health Sciences in Covilhã, helped to create and directed the National Institute of Biomedical Engineering (INEB), and was invited by the University of East Asia to study the re-establishment of the University of Angola, in 1987. He visited Guiné-Bissau to re-establish the Faculty of Medicine of Bissau (1990).
Throughout his career, Nuno Grande was awarded many prizes and commendations, including the Commendation of Grand Officer of Public Education of the Portuguese State and the Grand Cross of the Order of Prince Henrique. He is honorary citizen of many cities and, in 2005, he was honoured at the 20th World Congress of Lymphology held in Salvador da Baía, Brazil.
Recentl, when he was asked to name the musical and literary works that marked his life the most, he indicated the opera "Aida", by Giuseppe Verdi (1871), the play "Peer Gynt", with music by Edvard Grieg (1876) and the 9th Symphony of Beethoven; as literary works he chose the titles "Pátria", by poet Guerra Junqueiro (1896), "A Jangada de Pedra", by José Saramago (1986) and "Ismael, como o mundo veio a ser o que era", by Daniel Quinn (1977).
Nuno Grande practiced medicine for four decades as a general practitioner and continued to collaborate in periodical publications, contributing with work on various topics.
He died on 8 October 2012 at the age of 80, due to cardiovascular and neurological complications. His funeral was held at the Church of Nossa Senhora da Boavista, in Foco, and was buried in the Cemetery of Matosinhos.
In 2016, symbolically on the day of his birthday, the busts of the founders of ICBAS - Nuno Grande and Corino de Andrade, by the sculptor Hélder Carvalho, were inaugurated in the Faculties’ building.
