Sculptor, architect and university teacher



João Rafael de Basto Barata Feyo was born in Oeiras on february 18, 1938. In 1949 he moved to the city of Porto where his fahter, Salvador d’Eça Barata Feyo, was teaching, at the Porto School of Fine Arts (ESBAP).

He attended the preparatoyr course to enrol in ESBAP at the School of Decorative Arts of Soares dos Reis (1956-1957). In that School he studied Sculpture (1957-1966), course he concluded with the final mark of 17 ou of 20. In 1966 he submitted his final work entitled "Grupo Escultórico", earning him a score of 19. During the formation years, he was a disciple, amongst others, of the professors and artists Dordio Gomes (1890-1976), Barata Feyo (1899-1990), Heitor Cramez, Lagoa Henriques and Júlio Resende, and of the architect and professor Fernando Távora and of Artur Nobre de Gusmão (1920-2001).

Between 1968 and 1969 he took the course of Pedagogical Sciences at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Coimbra, and taught at the Industrial and Commercial School of Gondomar.
In ESBAP he also studied Architecture (1974-1976) and in the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto he defended the masters dissertation on Arte Pública – D. João VI no Passeio Atlântico (2014).

In 1972 he began an academic career as appointed assistant professor at ESBAP. Later he was a contracted professor, assistant professor and tenure professor.
As a teacher he participated in the School’s Meeting of Representatives, in the Scientific Board and Executive Board. He was a jury member in aggregation exams of sculptors, collaborated in the reform of ESBAP curricula (1976-1981) and in the cultural activities of the Commemorations of the Bicentenary of the School of Fine Arts (1979-1981).

Esculturas Lei e Justiça do Palácio de Justiça de Póvoa de Varzim / Sculptures Law and Justice of the Palace of Justice of Póvoa de VarzimJoão Barata Feyo has produced several works of art (sculptures, drawings, medals and paintings) exihibited both on public and private spaces, in individual (since 1964) and collective exhibitions (since 1958).
His sculptures caracterized by sober forms integrated in the environment, are divided in two groups, the public ones, corresponding to the demands of the commissionares, and the personal ones, close to the figurative expressionism.
His monumental sculptures perpetuate the portuguese contemporary tradition, representing in bronze figures of the portuguese history and culture.

Estátua Os Emigrantes, Monção / Statue Os Emigrantes, MonçãoAs a disciple of Barata Feyo, he colaborated in the enlargement and modulation of statues and monuments produced between 1955 e 1972, such as the Monument of Prince Henry, in Sagres, the Statue of Bartolomeu Dias, in Cape Town; and the statues for the Arrábida Bridge and the Court House, the equestrian statues of D. João VI and Vímara Peres, in Porto, and the monument of António Nobre, in Leça da Palmeira.
He also sculpted in wood, iron and clay, but bronze is the dominant material. His public art displayed in portuguese cities such as Monção, Fafe, Braga, Bragança, Maia e Lisboa.

Prémio / PrizeThis retired professor of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto was distinguished with the Press and art critics award, in the I Paris Biennale, with the Mestre Manuel Pereira Award, with the Scultpture Prize in the Exhibition of Arts of the Queima das Fitas of the University of Coimbra and the award in the contest for the Commemorative Medal of the Portuguese Banking Union.
