Seminário Maior do PortoCarlos Alberto Ferreira de Almeida was born on 27th December 1934, in Vila Maior, Vila da Feira, where he lived until the age of 11. He then entered the catholic school in Vila Nova de Gaia, and later moved to Porto (Seminário de Vilar and Seminário Maior). This is where he accomplished his preparatory school studies (1945-1954) and the Advanced Course in Theology (1954-1958).
He was appointed presbyter on 3rd August 1958, at the Porto Cathedral, by the Bishop D. António Ferreira Gomes. He was appointed supporting Vicar of Rio Tinto in January 1959, where he remained until 2nd January 1961. He remained the Priest of Santa Maria de Avioso and Gondim, both in Maia, until 1973, when he left ministration.

As a student, he enrolled in the History degree of the University of Coimbra in 1961. The following year he transferred to the newly reinstated Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto, where he accomplished his degree on 29th July 1968 with the thesis Vias Medievais I. Entre-Douro-e-Minho. He accomplished his degree with a final grade of 17 out of 20.

O Românico (Editorial Presença)That same year he started working as a teacher among the teaching staff of the Faculty where he obtained his degree, and where he spent his whole academic career. In March 1979 he argued his PhD thesis in Art History and Archaeology, which was entitled Arquitectura Românica de Entre-Douro-e-Minho. His supplementary dissertation was entitled Castelologia de Entre-Douro-e-Minho. Das origens a 1220.
In 1982 he gained his degree of "agregado" at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto, with the lesson Iconografia do Presépio Medieval. He obtained his title of full professor in 1984.
He was responsible for the creation of the Institutes of Archaeology (1974) and Art History (1982) of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto. He was also the first signatory for the creation of the Department of Heritage Science and Techniques.

Carlos Alberto Ferreira de Almeida. In MemoriamAuthor of an extensive range of scientific articles and books, he wrote on several subjects, but focused on Archaeology and Art History, Ethnography and Cultural Anthropology.
