Augusto Gomes 1910-1976 Painter and teacher |
Augusto de Oliveira Gomes was born in Matosinhos on 12 July 1910, to António Gomes de Oliveira and Ana Gomes da Silva.
He concluded his higher education studies in 1927, at the Rodrigues de Freitas Secondary School, in Porto, and then enrolled in the Preparatory Course at the School of Fine Arts in Porto, with the aim of studying painting.
While he was still a student, at the end of the 20s beginning of the 30s, Augusto Gomes exhibited his work with the art group + Além.
In the meantime, he moved to the School of Fine Arts in Lisbon, where he concluded the Preparatory Course in 1931. The following year, he once again moved to Porto and furthered his studies at the ESBAP School of Fine Arts, first in the Special Course and later in the higher degree Painting course.
At ESBAP, he studied under the guidance of painters José de Brito, Acácio Lino and Joaquim Lopes, ventured into the Special Sculpture Course (1936/1937) and concluded his Painting studies in 1941, with the exceptional mark of 19 out of 20. The phase that followed was dedicated to lecturing.
Between 1930 and 1940, he lectured at various schools all over the country (industrial schools in Bragança, Viana do Castelo and Viseu; at the Faria Guimarães School, in Porto, and Marquês de Pombal School, in Lisbon). This activity came to an end in 1944, when he decided to commit wholly to the arts.
During the 50s, he travelled twice on study visits, first to Spain and France, in 1954, and then to Belgium, in 1958). Upon his return, he began to lecture at university level, at the ESBAP. On 24 May 1958, he was appointed assistant professor in the 5th Group. In 1962, Augusto Gomes sat his Aggregation exams (equivalent to getting tenure), and on 22 July 1964 he finally became a Professor. In the same year, he also became a member of the National Education Board.
As a Professor, he took part in the Magna exhibitions organized by ESBAP, in the Aesthetic Celebration Missions (periods during which artistic activities took place) and in study trips: to Paris, Brussels and to cities in Italy and England.
At the ESBAP, he performed duties as Librarian, between 1968 and 1972, as Secretary, between 1972 and 1974, and held the office of Professor up to the Revolution in 25 April 1974, when he retired.
In 1974, already retired, he took part in a collective exhibition of artists from the Matosinhos council, at the Matosinhos Orfeão.
In 1975, his works were exhibited in the 20th century Art Exhibition/Collection, in the Soares dos Reis National Museum, in Porto.
His artistic works consist of paintings, ceramic work, stained-glass windows, tapestries, glazed tiles, illustrations, wooden engravings, models and lithography and scenography work.
Some of the examples of his versatile and prize-winning works include: the frescos in the shrine of the Nossa Senhora da Conceição Church, in Porto; the stone and coloured painting on the walls of the Vouga building; the glazed tiles in the Companhia União Fabril Portuense factory, in Porto; the fresco in the atrium of the Ofir Hotel; the wall paintings in the Tourism Office building, in Matosinhos; the panels in the Batalha Hotel and Portugália Bookstore, in Porto, and in the Porto-Mar Hotel, in Matosinhos; and the models and the stage maquettes built for the Experimental Theatre, in Porto, between 1953 and 1958.
In addition to the events mentioned previously, Augusto Gomes also exhibited his work overseas and in the former Portuguese colonies, namely in Brazil, as a member of the Portuguese delegation attending the 2nd Biennial Exhibition in S. Paulo.
His works are part of national art collections in Brazil and the United States, and can also be admired in several museums: Bragança, Luanda, and in the Soares dos Reis National Museum, in Porto
Augusto Gomes died in Matosinhos in 28 October 1976.
