António de Sousa Magalhães e Lemos 1855-1931 Neurologist, psychiatrist and university teacher |
António de Sousa Magalhães e Lemos was the son of João António de Magalhães Lemos and Emília de Jesus de Sousa. He was born in Casa do Curral, Margaride, Felgueiras, on 18 August 1855.
He attended secondary school in Braga and Porto, and later the Porto Medical-Surgical School of Porto where he graduated with honours on 17 October 1882, presenting the thesis "A Região Psychomotriz: apontamentos para contribuir ao estudo da sua anatomia" [The psychomotor region: notes towards the study of its anatomy]. The jury panel was presided over by Ricardo Jorge and his work was dedicated to his closest relatives, the faculty of the School – especially his supervisor, Pedro Augusto Dias -, his friend A. Plácido, Costa Simões and his colleagues.
On 28 June 1883, following an open competition, he was appointed assistant physician at the recently established Hospital Conde de Ferreira and, later on 12 May 1892, he took up office as associate physician. On 15 February 1887, he was appointed Assistant Teacher of the 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th chairs at the Industrial and Trade Institute of Porto, where he taught until 1929
In 1889 he published the dissertation "A paralysia geral" [General paralysis], to apply to the Medical-Surgical School of Porto.
In 1911, he was appointed professor of neurology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto pelo by decree of 10 May of that year (Official Journal, No. 109, of 11 May). He was responsible for the chair of Psychiatry, which had been left vacant due to the transfer of Professor Júlio de Matos to the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon (Decree of 12 August 1911, Government Gazette, no. 200, of 28 of August).
Six years later, he was awarded the degree of Doctor in Medicine by the School Board of FMUP and in 1921 he took over the chair of Psychiatry (Ministerial Decree of 21 February, Government Gazette, no. 52, of 5 March).
In 1925, the periodical "O Primeiro de Janeiro" reported his request for retirement due to physical disability. This request was greeted with a show of appreciation for the Professor. The Minister of Education informed him that he did not have to wait for the decree on his retirement, while the Director of the Faculty of Medicine asked him not to withdraw before the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Royal School of Surgery, which would take place in June that year.
In 1926 he was appointed Director of the Clinical Service of Clinical Psychiatry by decree of 26 November (Government Gazette, no. 280, of 29 November).
He was a member of the Legal Medical Board, professor of Forensic Psychiatry in the university course of the Institute of Forensic Medicine and directed, for many years, Hospital Conde de Ferreira.
He participated in many scientific events and was the Honorary President of the Neurology and Psychiatry Department of the International Congress of Medicine of Paris. He wrote many scientific works, including "Hallucinations de l’ouie" (Paris, 1912) and "A Psiquiatria e a neurologia no Porto: história e estado actual do seu ensino" (Porto, 1925).
His life and work were widely acknowledged, earning him many commendations. He was honorary member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, member of the Society of Medical Sciences and of the Institute of Coimbra, corresponding-member of various international scientific institutions, Knight of the Legion of Honour and officer of Public Education in France.
In 1927 he bequeathed his house and adjoining land in Campo 24 de Agosto to the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, to support the Magalhães Lemos Clinic (Dispensary).
He was married to Amélia Emília de Castro and had no children.
He died in Porto on 22 July 1931. His funeral was held in the Church of Ordem da Trindade and the tributes were in charge of Canon Gaspar Joaquim de Freitas, Secretary to the Ecclesiastic Board, seconded by Francisco de Melo, rector of the Brotherhood of Santo António dos Congregados and by António da Costa e Silva, vicar of the Chapel of Almas. The long funeral procession headed to the Cemetery of Agramonte, in Porto. His cap was carried by Alberto Brochado and the key to the urn by Tiago de Almeida, who handed it to Alberto Eduardo Plácido, Rector of the University of Porto. Bento Carqueja, Almeida Garrett and Baia Júnior, among others, delivered the funeral eulogy. A donation to the amount of 1 000 escudos was given to the "Magalhães Lemos" Dispensary.
