António Bomfim Barreiros was born in Porto, in the parish of Bonfim, on 9 July 1886. He was one of four children of Luís José de Brito Barreiros and Maria Bomfim Barreiros.

He studied at the Polytechnic Academy of Porto and in 1912 completed his degree in Civil Engineering and Public Works at the School of Engineering linked to the Faculty of Sciences – University of Porto.

Between 1914 and 1933, he taught "Linear Geometric Drawing and Principles of Perspective", " Linear Geometric Drawing, Descriptive Geometry and Perspective" and "Descriptive Geometry and Esterotomy" at the Porto School of Fine Arts.
On 26 May 1919 he became 1st Assistant of the 1st Department of the Technical Faculty, and on 29 October 1932 he assumed functions as Full Professor of the 2nd group (Roads and Railway) of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto.

António Bomfim Barreiros was the director of the Museum and Bureau of Topography, Librarian and representative of the Full Professors of the FEUP in the University Senate. He reached the retirement age on 9 July 1956 and retired the following year, (Official Journal, 2nd Series, no. 218, of 24 October).

Obra «Formação das equações de erro nas triangulações cadastrais» de António Bomfim Barreiros / Work «Formação das equações de erro nas triangulações cadastrais» of António Bomfim BarreirosBetween 1923 and 1941, he was Chief Engineer of the City Map Services, in the Porto City Council. Among other works, he developed the map of the city of Porto. Along with architect Arménio Losa he did various works for the City Council of Vila Nova de Gaia, among which the "Pavement of R. João de Deus, Mafamude" (1939), "Development of the General urban Plan of Vila Nova de Gaia" (1945 and 1948) and "Development Works for the General Urban Plan of Vila Nova de Gaia – Cabo Mor Area" (1948). He drew up an urban plan for Viseu and invented ways to solve the problems in his area of expertise.

António Bomfim Barreiros also worked with his brother Guilherme Bomfim Barreiros, an engineer by training and photographer by vocation, including a project for expanding the roads in Trofa. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Railways and of the Senior Council for Public Works (1952).

He published the following scientific works "A Triangulação da Nova Planta do Porto" (1928), "Formação das equações de erro nas triangulações cadastrais" (1930) (1930), "O método de Gehler e o método de Cross no cálculo das estruturas contínuas" (1951), "Regularização das curvas das vias férreas pela correção das flechas: método geométrico por anamorfose" (1953), "A reprodução de plantas em que o papel sofreu contrações desiguais segundo as direções ortogonais" (1959).

He died in Porto on 21 November 1977.
