S. José das Taipas Church is located close to Palácio da Justiça [Law Court] and several listed buildings, such as the Cadeia e Tribunal da Relação do Porto [Jail and Court of Appeal] and Igreja e o Mosteiro de São Bento da Vitória [Church and Monastery of São Bento da Vitória]. It is also very close to the house where João Baptista de Almeida Garrett was born, in Rua Dr. Barbosa de Castro, 37-41, a street known as Rua do Calvário between 1679 and 1920.
S. José das Taipas Church (1795-1878) was designed and decorated by the engineer and architect Carlos Amarante in the Neo-Classical style, visible in other works by the architect (e.g., churches of Bom Jesus, of S. João de Marcos and Pópulo, in Braga).
S. José das Taipas Church was managed by the Brotherhood Almas de S. José das Taipas, established in 1780 by joining the confraternities of S. Nicolau Tolentino das Almas and of S. José das Taipas. At first, this Brotherhood met in a chapel in Rua do Calvário, and in 1810 the residents of Ribeira asked them to pray for the victims of the Ponte das Barcas disaster, on 29 March 1809, and to collect donations. This is why, for about 100 years, the Brotherhood held an annual procession between this church and Ribeira, for which Teixeira Lopes, the father, produced a bronze mural called "Alminhas da Ponte" [the shrine of the bridge].
On the exterior staircase of the church, there is a charity box for the "Almas" [donations], and inside the church an oil painting reminds us of that dreadful episode in the history of Porto.
