Background history of the Governing Bodies of the University of Porto

University higher education became institutionalized in Porto in less than six months, with the definition of its autonomy, the academic bodies responsible for management and administration, and the matters that are relevant to both students and teachers.

One month after the University of Porto was created, the diploma Constituição Universitária [University Constitution] governing all these matters was introduced in April 1911. In August of the same year, the Regulamento das Secretarias Geraes e Thesourarias das Universidades [Regulation on the General University Secretariats and Treasuries] completed the work initiated months before, analysing thoroughly the administrative services, which had only been addressed lightly by the Constituição Universitária [University Constitution].

After the first two decades, the period after the enactment of the new Estatuto da Instrução Universitária, [Statutes of University Education] in 1930 is characterized by a legal hiatus due to the gradual increase of the responsibilities shared by the governing bodies, and the increase in the volume and difficulty of technical and administrative tasks.

In 1988, the law on university autonomy was enacted. In that same year, the first Organic Law of the University of Porto was adopted; it was revised later in 1992 and 1997. The first Statutes of the University of Porto date back to 1989.
The first amendment to the Statutes of the University of Porto was the result of decisions made in the University of Porto Assembly meetings held in 1999, 2000 and 2001.

In January 2006, the second amendment to the Statutes of the University of Porto, was published, as the result of decisions made in the University of Porto Assembly meetings of 6 July and 14 September 2005.

In 2009, when the University of Porto became a Foundation, the current Statutes of the University were introduced.
