Manuel Ferreira de Oliveira

Manuel Ferreira de Oliveira 1948-2019 Engineer, university teacher and manager

Manuel Ferreira de Oliveira was born on 21 December 1948.

He studied Electrical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (1971) and obtained the degrees of Master of Science and Doctor in Engineering at the University of Manchester. He trained in the area of Management at IMD, in Lausanne, Switzerland, and at Harvard and Wharton Business Schools, in the United States of America.

He was a teacher and researcher at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (1971-1980), gradually taking over the functions of Monitor, Assistant, Assistant Professor, Tenured Professor and Full Professor (1979).

Between 1980 and 1995, he lived and worked in Venezuela and UK, where he held various positions in the international oil industry, working for PDV – Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. and BP – The British Petroleum Company, Plc., such as Corporate Planning Manager at Lagoven, S.A. (Caracas), Director of Nynas Petroleum (Stockholm), of Rhur Oel (Dusseldorf) and of PDv Services (Hague), and as Chairman and CEO of BP Bitor, S.A. and Bitor Energy, Plc. (London).

After 1995, he was Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of Petrogal (1995-2000), Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of Unicer – bebidas de Portugal, SGPS, S.A. (2000/2006) and Director of Galp Energia (2006), where he is the CEO since January 2007.

At the University of Porto, he iwas the Chairman of the Advisory Board of EGP (University of Oporto Businesse School), member of the Senate (2002-2005), vice-president of the General Council of the University of Porto (2010-2013) and member of the Curators Council of the Foundation (2015-) . He was also a member of the advisory boards of the Faculty of Economics and of the Department of Electrical Engineering of the FEUP.

Ferreira de Oliveira was a member of the Executive Committee of the Catholic University - Porto Delegation, of the Governing Board of BCSD – Portugal, of the General Council of AEP, Vice-president of the Forum for Competitiveness and of the European Confederation of Beer Manufacturers (BOE - Brewers of Europe/ EBC - European Brewery Convention) e Grand Master of the Brotherhood of Ale Drinkers.

In the Portuguese Engineers Association he was a council member (1999) and obtained the titles of Specialist on Energy (1999) and engineering and industrial management (2002).

He received the commendation of the Order of Francisco de Miranda conferred by the President of the Republic of Venezuela (1995), the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit, awarded by the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic (2005) and several prizes: Personality of the Year 2006 (Recursos Humanos Magazine), Career Recognition of Merit (Rotary 2006-2007), Best Professor of the Executive MBA 2018-2019 (Porto Business School), Best European CEO of Oil & Gas Company 2011 (Thomson Reuters survey), The Best Leader in the Management of a Private Comapny in Portugal 2012 and the Most Transformational Leader 2016 ( Leadership Business Academy).

He was is married and had two children.

He died on october 5th 2019.
