1898-1981
University Teacher and Lawyer

Born in Porto on 7 September 1898, António Luís Gomes was the son of the reputed Republican António Luís Gomes (Minister of the 1st Republic and Rector of the University of Coimbra) and brother of Professor Ruy Luís Gomes (Full Professor of the Faculty of Sciences of Porto and first Rector of this University after the revolution).

He joined the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra like his father and then completed his BSc in Law. After the creation of the First Faculty of Arts of Porto, he was invited in 1919 for the position of Contract Teacher of the 2nd Group (Romance Philology) and later, in 1921, he was appointed Ordinary Professor for the chairs Portuguese Literature and Economic and Political Geography. Following the slanderous campaign "Homem Cristo" [Man Christ] against the institution, he terminated his contract in 1923 to pursue a career as a prosecutor at the Public Prosecutor’s Office, in Mogadouro, and later took up the post of Prosecutor at the Court of Executions.

In 1933, he was appointed by Salazar for the position of Secretary-General of the Ministry of Finance (which he held until 1940) and Director-General of Treasury, promoting the creation of the Historical Archive of the Ministry of Finance, the Library of the National Palace of Mafra and the reorganization of the Directorate of National Palaces. He was a member of several public committees appointed by the government and a member of the Board of Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa [State charity institution] in 1940 and of the Caixa de Previdência dos Empregados da Assistência Pública [Welfare Fund of the Civil Servants] in 1944.

At the same time, in 1945, he was appointed Chairman of the Board of the Fundação da Casa de Bragança [Foundation of the House of Bragança]. Here he played an important cultural and administrative role, in particular by encouraging the scientific and artistic production of Casa de Bragança. In terms of public assistance and promotion of education, he was also the founder of Obra Social de S. Martinho da Gândara, a social charity institution.

He held the position of administrator of the Bank of Portugal until the Revolution of 1974, was removed from this appointment, and then dedicated himself to restoring the rights of the Fundação da Casa de Bragança. He died in Lisbon on 2 January 1981.
