Details
Summary: The R&D project iVLAB aims the development of a new and innovative product, both at national and world scale, with a big impact in the cork industry target market.
The national cork exporting companies have several problems during the acceptation/validation process of cork-stoppers by their clients. These difficulties are due to non-existence of a reference tool, existing at both sides, which allows the qualitative and rigorous analyses of the all cork surface using reference patterns or technical specifications set in supply commercial contracts.
The main goal of the R&D project iVLAB is to develop sophisticated laboratory equipment using advanced image processing technology. This equipment will allow the evaluation and validation of cork-stoppers samples directly related to the order delivered/received. Concretely, the aim is to develop a system that generates, in an automatic way, a complete report analysis of the all cork-stoppers surface (body and tops). This analysis will be accomplished using innovative techniques of colour images processing, namely, through the surface roughness detection as well as exploring advanced processing algorithms and advanced classifiers based on innovative techniques.
The result of this project is a system that will allow solving problems of paramount importance in the cork industry, allowing that supplier/producer and importer/consumer have a reference tool for evaluation and validation of the delivered/received products.
At this moment, it does not exist any solution such as the one proposed with this R&D project. The consortium, based on the deep knowledge about the domain of the cork industry sector, predicts a great success for a commercial product obtained from the results of this R&D project.
