Since 1993, FAUP integrates a Documentation Centre for Urbanism and Architecture [CDUA] as part of their Documentation Services. It develops activities related to i) the collection, acquisition, deposit, conservation and protection of collections/archives with “patrimonial, historical, artistic or documental value relative to Portuguese architecture and urbanism from Porto” in particular during the twentieth century [cf. Statutes]. It also develops activities related to ii) the registration, preservation, research and dissemination of the Faculty’s documentation with patrimonial, historical or artistic value; iii) the promotion of actions related to culture (it organises expositions or loans documentation from collections).
CDUA is in charge of the protection of its own documental heritage and/or other documentation deposited in its documentation centre. This centre aims at preserving the legacy of the past for future generations. For this, it is important to improve measures related to the preservation, conservation and dissemination of such heritage, in particular, the registration and description of documentation on an IT platform. International norms relative to the classification of documentation would be used so that information can be easily retrieved. Other measures to be improved are related to environmental and safety conditions in the depositories; the arrangement of documents; the promotion of the reproduction of documents, mainly for research purposes (including the creation of image databases with “digital objects”, which would enable viewing the document without exposing the original to environmental and human damage).
